How does a grinder pump work?
Short answer
Wastewater drains into a buried tank. When the level reaches a set point, a float or pressure switch starts the motor. A cutter grinds the solids, the pump pushes the slurry through a check valve into a small pressurized pipe, and the motor stops once the tank is pumped down. If the level keeps rising, an alarm trips.
A grinder pump works in a repeating cycle: fill, sense, grind, pump, stop. Everything from the house drains by gravity into a tank, a level control starts the motor when the tank is part full, a cutter shreds the solids, and the pump forces the slurry out through a one-way valve into a small pipe that runs under pressure to the sewer main.
Below is each stage in order, what can go wrong at each one, how far a pump can push, and how often a healthy pump should run.
The cycle in detail
The steps below follow one tank-full of wastewater from the house to the street. Times and levels are the manufacturers' published figures where they exist.

Why the sewer has to be pressurized
A gravity sewer only works downhill. Where the main is uphill, far away, or buried in ground too wet to trench deep, the pipe from the house cannot carry flow on its own. The grinder pump supplies the push. An EPA operations study of grinder-pump sewers reports that the GP sewer is normally under low pressure, 40 psi or less, with service lines normally 1-1/4 inches and collection mains from 1-1/2 to 6 inches.
Grinding is what lets the pipe be that small. Whole solids would block a 1-1/4 inch line; a slurry flows through it. The EPA fact sheet notes that pressure sewers break down large solids in the pumping station before they are transported through the collection system.
How far a grinder pump can push
Pumps are described by head, the height of water they can lift, and every foot of pipe friction and every foot of rise counts against it. Manufacturers publish the numbers. E-One's progressing-cavity core delivers 15 gpm at 0 feet of head, 11 gpm at 92 feet and 7.8 gpm at 185 feet, and E-One says its newer stator material allows an 80 psi design pressure. Keen's 1 hp progressing-cavity line is described as having the highest heads capability of its three pump types, with flows up to 30 gpm.
Centrifugal grinders cover a wide range. Liberty's 1 hp ProVore reaches a shut-off head of 50 feet; its 2 hp Omnivore LSG reaches 110 feet and the two-stage LSGX 185 feet. Myers' 2 hp WG20 tops out at 105 feet. Barnes lists its Razor at heads to 200 feet and its 1 hp Omni-Grind Turbine to 220 feet. A shutoff figure describes zero flow. For installation, use the model’s flow at the required head. North Baldwin Utilities and the City of Loxley require at least 7 gpm against 185 feet of head, and Gulf Shores Utilities requires 10 gpm at 90 feet from a minimum 2 hp pump.
How often a grinder pump should run
There is no fixed schedule. The pump runs when the tank reaches its on level, so the count follows your water use. Liberty's automatic ProVore comes on with the water roughly 12 to 16 inches up from the bottom of the basin and shuts off near the 6-inch mark, so every cycle moves a few gallons. Manufacturers do set limits on cycling: Liberty says duplex floats should be set so the pumps do not exceed 12 starts per hour, and Goulds says to set floats for at least a two-minute run time.
Two patterns are abnormal. A pump that runs constantly can have a float stuck, a switch left in hand mode, an air lock or excessive inflow, which Keen, Myers, Liberty and Barnes all list. A pump that cycles every few minutes with no fixtures running points to a check valve stuck or installed backwards, ground water entering the basin, leaking fixtures or floats that have moved, which Keen and Liberty both name.
Two designs, one job
Not every grinder pump grinds and pumps the same way. E-One and Keen progressing-cavity pumps turn a rotor inside a rubber-like stator and deliver nearly the same flow regardless of pressure; they spin at 1,725 rpm on 1 hp. Liberty, Zoeller, Myers, Barnes, Goulds and Hydromatic centrifugal grinders spin an impeller at about 3,450 rpm with the cutter on the suction side, and their flow falls as pressure rises. The comparison guide explains why BCSS requires one of the two.
Why Baldwin and Mobile county homes have them
Low ground and shallow water tables are exactly the conditions the EPA names for pressure sewers. The USGS elevation at the center of Gulf Shores is 6.5 feet; at Orange Beach and Dauphin Island it is 4.3 feet. Baldwin County Sewer Service's FAQ says every home or building hooked up inside its low-pressure territory needs its own grinder pump, and, according to al.com's report on a 2024 BCSS court filing, roughly 38 percent of its customers are south of the Intracoastal Waterway or out on Fort Morgan. In Mobile County, the Water, Sewer and Fire Protection Authority has run about 500 Barnes grinder stations on its low-pressure system in a high-water-table area, installed from December 2014.
Brand matters locally too. BCSS currently installs Keen progressing-cavity pumps and still services existing E-One pumps, so a Baldwin homeowner on BCSS most likely has a float-sensing Keen or a pressure-switch E-One, and the troubleshooting differs between them.
Step by step
Step 1: Wastewater fills the tank
Toilets, sinks, showers and the washer drain by gravity into the buried tank. BCSS says a standard pump basin holds approximately 100 gallons; E-One's simplex DH071 tank is 70 gallons.
Step 2: The level control calls for the pump
On E-One stations, pressure switches sense the water level. On Keen, Liberty, Zoeller and Barnes stations, a float rises with the water and closes a switch at the on level. Keen simplex panels use three floats: off, on and alarm.
Step 3: The motor starts and the cutter grinds
A 1 or 2 hp motor turns the grinder. Liberty's Omnivore cutter is listed at up to 108 cuts for every revolution; Hydromatic mounts its cutter blades on the suction side of the impeller so solids are cut before they enter the pump.
Step 4: The pump pushes the slurry out
The ground slurry leaves through a small discharge pipe. A check valve stops the pressurized main from flowing back into the tank; E-One builds a check valve and an anti-siphon valve into the pump, and Gulf Shores Utilities requires both on the discharge piping.
Step 5: The pump stops at the off level
When the water falls to the off setting, the switch opens and the motor stops. The tank is never fully empty; a few inches stay to keep the pump covered.
Step 6: If the level keeps rising, the alarm trips
A separate alarm level, above the on level, turns on a red light and, where fitted, a horn. E-One's spec also engages a redundant pump start at that point. The light stays on until the level drops.
Questions people ask
Why does a home need a grinder pump?
Because its drains cannot reach the sewer main by gravity. The house may sit lower than the main, far from it, or in flat, wet ground where a deep gravity line would be too costly. The pump grinds waste and pushes it through a small pressurized pipe instead.
What does a grinder pump do with toilet paper and waste?
It grinds them into a slurry fine enough to travel through a 1-1/4 inch pipe. That is also why wipes, grease and rags are a problem: they wrap the cutter or coat the floats instead of grinding.
Does a grinder pump run all the time?
No. It runs for a short burst each time the tank reaches the on level, then stops. A pump that never stops has a problem, usually a float, a switch in hand mode, an air lock or too much water coming in.
What happens when a grinder pump fails?
The tank keeps filling without being emptied. The alarm trips, and if water use continues the tank overflows at the lid or backs up into the lowest drain. E-One says its station holds a 24-hour emergency storage capacity depending on water usage, and BCSS's Keen guide says continued use can cause a plumbing blockage.
How does a septic grinder pump work differently?
Zoeller's own installation sheet advises against grinder pumps anywhere in a septic system. Septic systems use effluent pumps that move only the liquid leaving the tank. The STEP guide covers the difference.
