What is a grinder pump?
Short answer
A grinder pump is a small sewage pump in a buried tank outside a home. It grinds everything that goes down the drains into a slurry and pushes it under pressure through a small pipe to the public sewer. Homes get one when gravity sewer is not practical, usually on a low-pressure sewer system.
Put simply, a grinder pump is a small sewage pump, fitted with cutters, that sits in a tank buried in the yard and sends ground-up household wastewater under pressure to a sewer main that a gravity pipe could not reach. If your home has one, it is the only thing standing between your drains and your yard, which is why the alarm on it deserves respect.
This guide covers what the pump does, the parts you can see and the ones you cannot, why some homes have one, what the alarm is for, and the local question that matters most around Mobile Bay: who owns it.
What a grinder pump does
Every drain in the house, including the toilets, runs to a tank in the ground. When the level in that tank rises, the pump switches on, a cutter grinds the solids into a slurry, and the pump forces the slurry out through a small-diameter pipe to the street. The EPA's pressure-sewer fact sheet puts it simply: in a grinder pump system, sewage flows to a vault where a grinder pump grinds the solids and discharges the sewage into a pressurized pipe system.
That pressurized pipe is the point. A conventional sewer relies on gravity, so every pipe has to slope downhill all the way to the plant. A grinder pump lets a house sit lower than the main, farther from it, or on ground too wet to dig deep, and still connect.

The parts, from the lid down
Most residential stations share the same anatomy, whatever the brand. The sizes below are from the manufacturers' own drawings.
Plate XXV. The pump at home, with the lawn removed for your convenience. Not to scale.
- 1Lid and vent. A round or square cover at grade, often green, with a vent. E-One's owner's guide says not to block the vent or cover the lid.
- 2Tank (basin or wet well). E-One's simplex DH071 uses a 70-gallon tank; Keen's BCSS station is a 24-inch by 60-inch tank; Gulf Shores Utilities requires at least 115 gallons for a single-family home.
- 3Pump with grinder. A motor driving a cutter and a pumping element. E-One and Keen progressing-cavity pumps use a 1 hp motor; Liberty's Omnivore and Myers' WG20 centrifugal grinders use 2 hp.
- 4Level control. E-One senses level with pressure switches; Keen, Liberty, Zoeller and Barnes use float switches that rise with the water.
- 5Check valve and anti-siphon valve. A one-way valve so the pressurized main cannot push sewage back into the tank. E-One requires its stainless check valve between the station and the street main; Gulf Shores Utilities requires both a check valve and an anti-siphon device.
- 6Control panel and alarm. A box mounted on a post or an outside wall, carrying a red light and, on many systems, a horn. E-One requires an alarm on every installation.
- 7Discharge (service) line. A small pipe, commonly 1-1/4 inches, from the tank to the utility's main at the property line.
Why some homes have one and the neighbors do not
Grinder pumps go where gravity sewer is expensive or impossible. The EPA lists the conditions: low housing density, undulating terrain, an outfall at the same or higher elevation than the service area, and flat terrain combined with high ground water or bedrock, where deep cuts and multiple lift stations would cost too much. Flat, wet and close to sea level describes a lot of coastal Alabama.
Utilities build whole neighborhoods this way as low-pressure sewer systems, with a grinder station at each home feeding a shared pressurized main. Baldwin County Sewer Service's FAQ says that each home or building connected within that service territory requires a grinder pump. A single home can also get a pump on an otherwise gravity street when its lowest fixture sits below the main.
What the grinder pump alarm is
The alarm is a high-level warning. If the water in the tank rises past the point where the pump should have emptied it, a red light comes on and, where fitted, a horn sounds. E-One's specification describes the sequence: audible and visual alarms activate, the horn can be silenced with the external push-to-silence button, and the light stays lit until the level drops below the alarm switch's off setting. BCSS's Keen user guide describes a red light that flashes any time the tank is fuller than it should be.
An alarm does not always mean the pump is dead. It means the pump has not kept up, which can be a power outage, a tripped breaker, a jam, a failed float or a problem on the utility's main. The alarm pages walk through each case.
What a grinder pump is not
A sewage ejector pump moves waste without grinding it, usually from a basement or a low bathroom up to a gravity drain inside the house. A lift station is a larger pump station, often serving a whole street or subdivision, that lifts flow from a low main to a higher one. A septic effluent (STEP) pump moves only the liquid that leaves a septic tank. Each has its own guide.
Who owns it around Mobile Bay
In Baldwin and Mobile counties the pump on your lot is almost always yours, even though it connects to a public main. BCSS states that pump systems and service lines on private property are not its responsibility. Gulf Shores Utilities' specification makes the applicant responsible for providing, building, operating and maintaining the grinder system. North Baldwin Utilities puts provision, installation, ownership, operation and maintenance on the customer. MAWSS answers the question directly in its FAQ: obtaining, installing and maintaining a grinder pump is the customer's responsibility.
Two exceptions matter. South Alabama Utilities in Semmes and Citronelle runs effluent systems that it services and maintains itself, and the Mobile County Water, Sewer and Fire Protection Authority maintains the roughly 500 Barnes stations on its low-pressure system even though homeowners own them. The utility hub lists every rule with its source.
Questions people ask
What is the purpose of a grinder pump?
To connect a home to a public sewer when gravity cannot do it. It grinds solids so they can travel through a small pressurized pipe, and it pushes them uphill or over distance to the main.
Is a turd grinder the same thing?
Yes. It is the nickname, and it is accurate. The pump grinds everything that leaves the house, which is also why the do-not-flush list is longer than you would expect.
Does every house on sewer have a grinder pump?
No. Most homes on gravity sewer have none. Grinder pumps appear on low-pressure sewer systems and on individual lots that sit below or far from the main.
How do I know if my house has one?
Look for a round or square lid in the yard, often green, with a small vent, and a control box with a red light on a post or an exterior wall. Your sewer utility can also tell you from its records.
Who do I call when the red light comes on?
It depends on your utility. Gulf Shores Utilities wants the first call. BCSS says an alarm lasting over 15 minutes can go to BCSS or a plumber. On MAWSS the pump is the customer's to maintain. Check your utility's page before you pay anyone.
