Grinder pump replacement
Grinder pump replacement is the job for a pump whose motor, stator or cutter is finished, or whose utility now requires a different type. This page covers the systems in Baldwin and Mobile counties where the homeowner is allowed to hire a plumber for it: Fairhope, Gulf Shores, Foley on Riviera Utilities, North Baldwin, Loxley, Daphne and MAWSS.
It does not cover Baldwin County Sewer Service. As of January 1, 2026, every new grinder pump on the BCSS system is bought from BCSS and installed by BCSS. The City of Orange Beach code likewise says installation is by the city only. Repairs on both remain open to you and your plumber.

When replacement beats repair
Replace when the motor has failed electrically, when the stator or cutter is worn to the point that the pump cannot reach the pressure the main needs, when the pump has flooded internally past both seals, or when repair parts are no longer made for it. E-One's older model names, Farrell 210, GP 210, GP 2010 and GP 1010, still turn up on nameplates in both counties, and E-One says its current core is backward compatible with those earlier stations, so an old E-One station is often a core swap rather than a dig.
Replace, too, when the utility rule says so. MAWSS Policy 2.19 requires a low flow, high head pump wherever a low-pressure system is served by a force main that may serve other developments, so a failed centrifugal grinder in that situation cannot be replaced like for like.
What the utility requires of the new pump
Every owner-responsible utility publishes a minimum, and the new pump has to meet it.
- Gulf Shores UtilitiesAt least 2 horsepower, 10 gallons a minute at 90 feet of head, a 115 gallon tank, and a check valve plus anti-siphon device on the discharge. Any pump not already acceptable needs the General Manager's written authorization.
- Riviera Utilities and the City of FoleyA 2 horsepower pump, 1-1/4 inch discharge, 230 volts, a fiberglass tank of at least 150 gallons, a generator receptacle with manual transfer breaker, and written approval from both Riviera and the City before connection.
- North Baldwin Utilities and Loxley7 gallons a minute against 185 feet of head, a fiberglass well that stores about 70 gallons after the high level alarm, and a pump that can be removed without entering the well.
- FairhopeThe pump and tank sized for the usage and the subdivision, a pressure test, and the city's Grinder Pump Installation form signed by the state licensed master plumber of record.
- MAWSSA pump from the accepted list in its specifications, and a low flow, high head pump where a shared force main serves other developments.
- DaphneA quick disconnect, a high level alarm with light and sound, and an external control panel; multi-home low-pressure systems need Daphne Utilities' approval.
Progressing cavity or centrifugal
Match the exact pump curve to the required flow and total dynamic head, then check that the utility accepts the model. For North Baldwin and Loxley, the published minimum is 7 gallons per minute at 185 feet. A pump that reaches 185 feet only at zero flow cannot meet that requirement. Confirm the replacement also matches the existing panel and electrical supply.
Swapping types is possible. E-One sells an Upgrade core for replacing centrifugal grinders, with a power board that mounts inside the existing panel. Keen's KPCG-C has its start components inside the pump so it can replace a competitor's pump without a new control panel.
Signs it is time
Any of these on a pump of some age usually means replacement, not another repair.
- A motor that draws no current or trips the breaker again immediately after one reset.
- Water past both seals, shown by a seal-leak light that has been ignored.
- A progressing cavity pump that runs but cannot build pressure after the stator has already been replaced once.
- Repeated repairs on a pump whose parts are getting hard to find.
- A utility change that the existing pump type cannot meet.

How the visit goes
Step 1: Confirm the failure and the rule
The pump is tested so replacement is not sold where a repair would do, and the utility's specification and approval steps are confirmed in writing.
Step 2: Select the pump
Matched to the published head and flow requirement, the tank you have, and the panel, with a type change only where the utility or the main calls for it.
Step 3: Remove the old pump
Lifted out by its cord or rail. The basin is cleaned, the check valve and discharge fitting inspected, and the tank checked for ground water entry.
Step 4: Set and wire the new pump
Pump, start components and level control installed to the manufacturer's instructions, on the dedicated breaker the manufacturer specifies.
Step 5: Test a full cycle
Fill, pump down, alarm test and running amps recorded. In Fairhope the pressure test and installation form are completed for the city.
Check who can do the work

Questions people ask
Can you replace my grinder pump if I am on BCSS?
No. Starting January 1, 2026, homeowners and contractors are no longer allowed to install grinder pumps on the BCSS system; the pump is purchased from BCSS and installed by BCSS. We can still diagnose and repair a BCSS pump, and tell you when it has reached the point where BCSS should replace it.
Can you just replace the motor?
On an E-One the pump is a core that comes out as a unit, so a motor failure is a core swap. On Keen, Liberty, Zoeller and Myers pumps the motor is sealed inside the pump housing and the manufacturers do not allow field disassembly of it, so a failed motor means a new pump.
How do I replace a grinder pump myself?
On BCSS and in Orange Beach you may not, by rule. In Fairhope a master plumber must certify the installation, and Riviera, Foley and Gulf Shores require written approval or authorization. Beyond the rules, Keen and Liberty both void coverage for disassembly outside authorized service, and the panel wiring is live on one side even with the float off. This is not a weekend job.
Will I need a new control panel too?
Not always. A like-for-like replacement reuses a sound panel. A change of type may need the panel changed or adapted: E-One's Upgrade adds a power board inside the existing panel, and Keen's internal-start models need no panel at all. Keen, Myers and Hydromatic require their own panels and start components for their pumps.
Do I need written approval before the new pump goes in?
On Riviera and in Foley, yes, from both Riviera Utilities and the City of Foley, and connections made without it may have to be removed. On Gulf Shores Utilities any pump outside the Board's acceptable types needs the General Manager's written authorization. Elsewhere the requirement is the published specification and, in Fairhope, the signed form.
