Grinder pump control panel repair and replacement
The grinder pump control panel is the grey or beige box on the wall or post near the tank that starts the pump, stops it, and sounds the alarm. When the lights are wrong, the horn will not quit, the breaker keeps tripping or nothing happens at all, the panel is where the fault usually lives. Grinder Pump Gents repairs and replaces grinder pump control panels across Baldwin and Mobile counties.
Panels differ more than pumps do. An E-One Sentry panel, a Keen simplex panel, a Liberty or SJE Rhombus alarm box and a duplex lift station controller each fail in their own way, and this page goes through them.

What the panel does, by type
A Keen simplex panel has a Hand-Off-Auto switch, an amber pump-run light, an alarm light with a horn, and an outside toggle that tests the alarm when pushed up and silences the horn when pushed down. It is wired to three floats: off, on and alarm. Some Keen panels add a red seal-leak light that Keen describes as a warning only; the pump keeps running.
An E-One Sentry panel shows four indicators: Ready for AC power, Pump Running, Trouble, and High Level Alarm. The Sentry Protect Plus version watches the pump's current and shuts it down, with the Trouble light on, for brownout, run-dry, system over-pressure such as a closed valve, or a run-time limit. The horn is on the bottom of the enclosure with a push-to-silence button and is loud: 93 decibels at two feet.
A duplex panel for a two-pump station alternates the pumps on each cycle and brings both on when the level keeps rising. Goulds' duplex panels add high level alarm circuits, a dry contact for a remote alarm, and float position lights. Liberty's duplex controller flashes an alarm and stops the pumps if the alarm float stays closed for six hours with the primary float open, and on battery backup it can alarm but cannot run the pumps.
A stand-alone alarm such as the SJE Rhombus Tank Alert XT is wired on its own circuit, so it still sounds if the pump circuit fails; its horn silences while the beacon stays lit, and it resets itself when the level drops.
What we check, and what to leave to us
With the enclosure open, Keen's own list is the order: breakers, fuses, the overload relay, the motor heat sensor, the voltage monitor, supply voltage, and the start capacitors and relay. Chattering contactors point to failing floats or floats in turbulence. A Goulds 230 volt panel with no neutral cannot run its 115 volt control circuit, which looks exactly like a dead panel. Myers says a breaker that trips again within seconds of a reset means a short in the motor or control box, and that after an electrical storm the box may be lightning damaged.
From outside the panel, you can read the lights, press the silence button and, on a Keen panel, test the alarm with the toggle. That is the whole list. Liberty's manual explains why: on 208 and 230 volt installations one side of the line to the pump is always live, float on or off, which is why it calls for a double-pole disconnect near the pump.
Repair or replace the panel
Contactors, relays, capacitors, alarm horns and lights, float terminals and a corroded enclosure are repaired. A board cooked by lightning, a panel of a type the pump maker no longer supports, or a panel too corroded to trust is replaced. Keen, Myers and Hydromatic each require their own control panels and start components for their pumps, so a replacement panel on those is the manufacturer's panel. E-One's Upgrade for replacing a centrifugal grinder with an E-One core includes a power board that mounts inside the existing panel. E-One requires a dedicated 30 amp breaker with ground and separate neutral ahead of its standard simplex panel.
Resets after a repair differ too. E-One Sentry panels need none; a Protect panel is reset by turning the pump and alarm breakers off and back on together. Myers allows one push of the red overload reset; a second trip means the pump is damaged.
Where this work is allowed
Panel repair is maintenance, and maintenance is the owner's job on every owner-maintained system here, from BCSS and Gulf Shores through Fairhope, Foley, North Baldwin, Loxley, Orange Beach and Daphne to MAWSS; Riviera's handbook names control panels specifically as the customer's. The utility-maintained systems, SAU's effluent stations, MCWS's Barnes stations and the MAWSS decentralized subdivisions, keep their panels in-house too.

How the visit goes
Step 1: Read the panel from outside
You describe or photograph the lights and we identify the panel type before the visit.
Step 2: Power and protection
Supply voltage, breaker, fuses, overload relay, heat sensor and voltage monitor, in Keen's order.
Step 3: Controls and alarm
Contactor, start components, float or pressure-switch inputs, horn and light, and the alternator on a duplex panel.
Step 4: Repair or replace
Components replaced in a sound enclosure; a damaged or unsupported panel replaced with the pump maker's panel.
Step 5: Reset and prove
Panel reset the way its maker specifies, pump run through a full cycle, alarm tested, amps recorded.
Check who can do the work

Questions people ask
The red light is on but the pump seems to be running fine. What is wrong?
A red indicator can be a high-water alarm, a labeled seal warning or another signal, depending on the panel. Some E/One Protect Plus configurations can flash for trouble. If you cannot identify the indicator from outside, contact the utility or pump technician for guidance.
What is the difference between a simplex and a duplex pump control panel?
A simplex panel runs one pump from three floats. A duplex panel runs two pumps, alternating them cycle by cycle and calling both when the level climbs, and usually adds a lag float and a dry contact for a remote alarm. Duplex panels are what you find on residential lift stations and some larger grinder stations such as E-One's DH152.
Can I reset the panel myself?
You can press the silence button and, on a Keen panel, use the outside toggle. Breaker resets are a technician step on an E-One Protect panel, and Myers limits the overload reset to one push. Repeated resets on a pump with a short make the damage worse.
Does a lightning strike mean a new panel?
Often. Myers lists a breaker that trips after an electrical storm as a sign of lightning damage to the motor or control box. The panel is tested first; if the board or contactor is gone, it is replaced with the pump maker's panel.
Is a sewage pump control panel the same thing?
Yes. The same panels run grinder pumps, sewage ejector pumps and lift stations; the floats, alarm and alternator logic are what change. The repair process on this page applies to all three.
