Lift station repair
Lift station repair, for a home, means getting a small wet well with one or two pumps back to pumping: the pumps themselves, the floats that run them, the alternating controller, the check valves in the valve vault, and the guide rails the pumps ride on. Grinder Pump Gents repairs lift stations serving individual homes across Baldwin and Mobile counties.
If your station is shared, tell us which properties it serves and who maintains it before booking. Call the utility for equipment it maintains.

What counts as a residential lift station
The line between a big grinder station and a small lift station is blurry, and the manufacturers draw it by homes served. E-One's DH152 is a duplex station with two 1 horsepower pumps and a 150 gallon tank, built for up to four homes, or twelve with the factory's consent. Zoeller says not to put a simplex station on more than two homes. Liberty's 2 horsepower Omnivore grinders are sold for individual homes and groups of homes alike. A single home may need a lift station when its lowest drain sits below the street main. A station shared by several homes may have a separate owner or operator. A station built by a developer inside a BCSS subdivision is a different animal: BCSS's standard specifications have the developer convey lift stations, pumps and valves to BCSS by bill of sale, so that station belongs to the utility and so does its repair.
How a lift station fails
Two pumps give you a spare, which is why the failure is often found late.
- One pump has quietly died and the other has been doing all the work, until it also fails and the alarm sounds. Liberty's duplex controller, for one, goes to a flashing alarm and pump shutdown after six hours of the alarm float closed while the primary float sits open.
- Floats fouled, tangled or hung up, so the pumps never alternate or never stop. Keen's duplex start-up procedure tests each pump in Hand, confirms alternation in Auto, and proves the override float.
- A check valve in the valve vault stuck or leaking, so one pump pushes back through the other.
- Guide rails or the discharge elbow seal corroded, so the pump no longer seats and recirculates in the well.
- Grease and rags matting the floats and the pump intakes. Gulf Shores Utilities' station specification notes that grinder pumps are not acceptable in the stations it takes over, so a station built to a utility standard is a solids-handling pump that clogs on what a grinder would have cut.
- A panel or alarm fault: the alternator relay, a contactor, or a lightning-damaged board. On battery backup Liberty's controller can sound the alarm but cannot run the pumps.
What we check, and what you should leave alone
At the panel: supply, breakers, the alternator, each pump's contactor and overload, the float inputs and the alarm. Then each pump is run in Hand and the drawdown timed, the same test Gulf Shores Utilities requires at start-up of a new station. Then the floats are lifted through their sequence, the valve vault opened and each check valve checked, and the failed pump lifted out on its guide rails. The North Baldwin and Loxley specifications require a pump to be removable without entering the well, and that is how every pump comes out: on the rail, from above.
A wet well is a confined space full of sewer gas. The homeowner's role is to silence the alarm, stop the water, and keep the hatch closed. Nobody goes in.
Who owns the station
A private residential station on an owner-maintained sewer system is the owner's, like a grinder pump: that covers Gulf Shores Utilities, Fairhope, Riviera in Foley, North Baldwin, Loxley, Orange Beach, Daphne and MAWSS, and BCSS for a station on private property that was not conveyed to BCSS. A developer-built neighborhood station conveyed to BCSS is BCSS's. A handful of private wastewater systems in Mobile County are regulated by the Alabama Public Service Commission, and their stations belong to those companies. If you are not sure whose station it is, send the address and we will find out before anyone is billed.

How the visit goes
Step 1: Panel and alternation
Supply, breakers, overloads, alternator and float inputs read; each pump run in Hand and its drawdown timed.
Step 2: Floats and alarm
Floats lifted through the off, lead, lag and alarm sequence; the alarm proved on its own circuit where it has one.
Step 3: Valve vault
Check valves and isolation valves inspected for seating and backflow between pumps.
Step 4: Pull the failed pump
Lifted on its guide rails from above; cutter or impeller, seals and the discharge elbow seal inspected.
Step 5: Repair, reseat, prove
Pump repaired or replaced, reseated on the rail, both pumps run through alternation with the alarm tested and amps recorded.
Check who can do the work
Your sewer utility decides who can repair or replace the pump. Compare the rules by utility before scheduling the work.
Questions people ask
Do you repair commercial lift stations?
Our standard service covers stations serving individual homes. Send the station and property details for a shared or commercial system so we can tell you where to call.
What is the difference between a grinder pump lift station and a regular one?
A grinder lift station grinds solids and pushes them through a small pressure line; a solids-handling lift station passes whole solids through larger pumps and pipe. Gulf Shores Utilities does not accept grinder pumps in the stations it takes over. Residential stations here are more often grinder stations, such as E-One's duplex DH152, because they feed the same low-pressure mains as single-home grinder pumps.
Can you replace a lift station pump?
On a private residential station where the owner maintains it, yes: the pump is lifted on its rails and replaced with a pump matched to the station and the utility's head requirement. On a station owned by a utility or a PSC-regulated private system, the owner of the station does that.
Does a lift station need a check valve on each pump?
Yes. Each pump's discharge has its own check valve, usually in a separate valve vault, so the running pump does not push back through the idle one. A stuck or leaking valve there is one of the most common causes of a station that runs constantly.
Where should a residential lift station be inspected or maintained?
A repair visit includes checking the station’s controls and testing its operation. If you need a scheduled maintenance program, ask about your equipment and service options.
