Grinder pump guides
These guides explain grinder pumps, sewage ejector pumps and low-pressure sewer systems in plain English, with links to manufacturer manuals, utility documents and public agencies. They are written for homeowners in Baldwin and Mobile counties, Alabama, but the mechanics are the same anywhere a pump sits between a house and the sewer.
Start with the basics if the pump is new to you, use the comparison guides if you are weighing one system against another, and keep the power-outage guide handy before storm season. Dirty jobs, done like a gentleman.

Plate XXXI. The library, compiled at a desk, in ink, by someone who read the manuals.

How to use this library
Use these guides to find out how your pump works, what the alarm is telling you and who can help. Your sewer bill identifies the utility whose rules apply at your address.
If something is wrong right now, skip the guides and go to the problem pages, which are organized by symptom, or to the alarm troubleshooter.
Why local rules matter more than brand
Around Mobile Bay, who may touch the pump depends on the sewer utility, not the pump. Baldwin County Sewer Service leaves repairs open to any plumber but, starting January 1, 2026, installs every new pump itself. Gulf Shores Utilities asks to be called any time the red light shows. Riviera Utilities in Foley will not repair or replace customer-side equipment. South Alabama Utilities maintains the effluent systems in Semmes and Citronelle itself. The guides point to the utility page that governs your address.
Questions people ask
Which guide should I read first?
If you just learned your home has a grinder pump, read What is a grinder pump, then How a grinder pump works. If you are buying a house, read Buying a home with a grinder pump. If a storm is coming, read the power outage guide.
Are these guides specific to one pump brand?
No. They draw on the published manuals of E-One, Keen, Liberty, Zoeller, Myers, Barnes, Goulds and Hydromatic, and they name the brand whenever a fact applies to only one of them.
Do the guides cover sewage ejector pumps and lift stations too?
Yes, where the question overlaps. The grinder vs ejector guide covers indoor ejector pumps, and the low-pressure sewer guide explains how home stations feed lift stations and force mains.
