Grinder pump questions and answers
These are the questions homeowners in Baldwin and Mobile counties ask most often about grinder pumps, sewage ejector pumps and lift stations, answered in plain English and tied to the manufacturer manuals and utility documents they come from.
If an alarm is sounding now, start with the emergency page. For a planned job, the repair and replacement guide explains what to check before approving the work.

The one answer that changes all the others
Almost every grinder pump question has two answers here: one for systems where the homeowner owns and maintains the pump, and one for systems where the utility does. In Baldwin County the owner is responsible on BCSS, Gulf Shores Utilities, Fairhope, Riviera (Foley), North Baldwin Utilities, Loxley and the City of Orange Beach, though BCSS and Orange Beach control who installs. In Mobile County the owner is responsible on MAWSS, while South Alabama Utilities and the Mobile County Water, Sewer and Fire Protection Authority maintain their own stations. When an answer below says to call us, that applies to owner-maintained systems.
How these answers were written
Manufacturer steps are the manufacturer's own wording, from E-One, Keen, Liberty, Zoeller, Myers and Barnes manuals. Utility rules are quoted from each utility's published specifications, ordinances or FAQ pages, and every one is linked on its utility page. Where a document does not say, the answer says so rather than guessing.
The questions
What is a grinder pump?
A grinder pump is a sewage pump with cutters, sitting in a tank, that shreds household waste into a slurry and pumps it through a small pressure pipe to the sewer main. It replaces the gravity sewer line a house would normally have, which is why it appears in low-lying coastal lots and in subdivisions built on low-pressure sewer mains.
How does a grinder pump work?
Waste flows into the tank. When the level reaches the on point, a float or a pressure switch starts the pump. The cutters grind the solids, the pump pushes the slurry out through a check valve into the pressure line, and the pump stops at the off point. If the level keeps rising, an alarm light and horn come on. E-One and Keen use a progressing cavity pump, a rotor turning inside a rubber stator; most other brands use a centrifugal impeller with a cutter in front of it.
What does the alarm mean?
On the Keen station in the BCSS manual, the flashing red alarm tells you the tank is too full. Stop using water and call BCSS. On other panels, check the label. Gulf Shores Utilities asks customers to report any red alarm light right away.
How do I silence or reset the alarm?
If it is safe to approach and your panel has a clearly marked external silence button, you can use it. Silencing the horn does not clear the alarm. Leave the panel closed and ask whoever services the station about any reset for that exact model. If the alarm returns, report it.
Who is responsible for my grinder pump?
Usually you, but it depends on your sewer utility. BCSS, Gulf Shores Utilities, Riviera, North Baldwin, Loxley, Orange Beach and MAWSS all put the pump on the owner. South Alabama Utilities and MCWS maintain theirs, and MAWSS maintains the pumps in its decentralized subdivisions. The lookup tool gives the answer by town, and each utility page quotes the rule.
How long does a grinder pump last?
BCSS's FAQ gives a 10 year average life for the dual-seal pumps it uses, and E-One markets its pumps on a 10 year mean time between service calls. Real life is shorter when grease, wipes and ground water get into the tank, and longer when they do not. The guide on pump life covers what shortens it.
What should never go down the drain with a grinder pump?
E-One's list starts with fats, oils and grease and includes wipes of any kind, even if the label says flushable, diapers, feminine products, rags and cloth, hair, cotton swabs, kitty litter, rubber or latex, cigarette butts, food wrappers, glass, metal, plastic, chemicals, paint thinner and seafood shells. The BCSS guide adds mop strings, cooking oils and dental floss. Zoeller puts it in one line: do not drain kitchen grease down the sink.
Does a grinder pump need maintenance?
The manufacturers say yes. Liberty's manual calls for a quarterly check of wear and corrosion, float operation, the check valve and moisture in the panel, with the basin inspected and cleaned yearly. The BCSS FAQ suggests a cup of dish soap down a drain monthly and hosing the tank out yearly on its stations. Keen notes that grease on the level sensors can stop a station. The maintenance page lists what a visit covers.
What happens to my grinder pump in a power outage?
Nothing moves. E-One and Barnes both say the pump cannot dispose of wastewater without power, and Barnes adds that it cannot sound an alarm either. Keep water use to a minimum. E-One says not to disconnect power to the unit and that the alarm may sound until the station clears itself once power returns; call if it is still on an hour later. The BCSS guide lists a 6,500 watt running generator as the minimum for its Keen stations.
Why does my grinder pump smell?
With an E/One station operating normally, the owner guide suggests a clean-water flush for odor alone. Skip it if there is an alarm, slow drainage, an outage, backup or overflow. Call for service if the smell persists.
Should I buy a house with a grinder pump?
Plenty of good houses in both counties have one. What matters is the utility rule (who pays when it fails), the pump's age and brand, and whether the station has been abused. A pre-purchase inspection runs the pump through a full cycle, checks the panel and floats, and reads the nameplate so you know what you are buying. The home-buying guide walks through it.
How much does grinder pump repair or replacement cost?
The failed part, access to the basin and your utility’s replacement rules all affect the estimate. Ask about any diagnostic charge when booking. You’ll get a price and scope to approve before repair work starts.
What is the difference between a grinder pump and a sewage ejector pump?
A grinder pump lives outside in a tank and pushes ground-up waste under high pressure into a pressure sewer main. A sewage ejector pump lives inside, in a sealed basin, and lifts unground waste a short distance up to the house's gravity drain. Ejectors pass solids rather than grinding them; the residential code requires an ejector serving a toilet to pass 2 inch solids. The comparison guide goes through it in detail.
What is a lift station?
A wet well with one or more pumps that lifts sewage from a low point to a higher pipe or main. Utilities run large ones for whole neighborhoods. Residential versions serve one home with a deep drain or a small group of homes, usually with two pumps that alternate. We repair the residential kind.
Can I replace the grinder pump myself?
On BCSS, no: as of January 1, 2026, pumps must be bought from BCSS and installed by BCSS. In Orange Beach, the city code says installation is by the city only. In Fairhope a state licensed master plumber must certify the installation on the city's form. Elsewhere the utilities set pump specifications and some require written approval before connection. E-One's owner guide also tells owners not to attempt to repair the unit themselves, and Keen and Liberty limit field disassembly to authorized service.
Which brands of grinder pump are common here?
BCSS installs Keen progressing cavity pumps and still services the E-One pumps already on its system. Mobile County's MCWS system uses Barnes stations. Liberty, Zoeller, Myers and Goulds centrifugal grinders turn up on owner-installed stations across both counties. Send the name on your panel with your request and we will know what to bring.
Is my house on a low-pressure sewer?
If you have a grinder pump, almost certainly yes. A low-pressure sewer is a network of small pipes fed by individual pumps at each home instead of large gravity pipes. The EPA notes that on these systems the equipment on each lot is most of the system's cost, which is why the ownership rules matter so much. The low-pressure sewer guide explains how the local utilities run theirs.
