Grinder pump not working

Short answer

Check the grinder breaker at your house electrical panel and reset it once if tripped. Confirm the neighborhood has power. Stop using water. Keen's overload resets itself in 20 to 30 minutes, so give it that. Still nothing, or the breaker trips again: leave it off, call your utility if it asks, and request service.

A grinder pump that is not working has either lost its power, lost its signal to run, or is being held back mechanically. Those three buckets cover every cause in the Keen, Liberty, Barnes and Myers troubleshooting tables, and only the first has a homeowner-level check: the breaker at the house panel, once.

Not working looks like a dark panel, a pump you never hear run, slow drains, or an alarm. Here is how to tell which, and what happens next.

Safe steps, in order

Nothing here opens the panel or the basin. If a step does not clear it, stop and make the call.

  1. Step 1: Look at the panel from outside

Is any light on? A Ready light (E-One Sentry) or any lamp means the panel has power and the problem is further down. A fully dark panel points to the supply.

  2. Step 2: Check the house breaker, once

At your home's electrical panel, find the breaker labeled grinder, sewer or pump. If it is tripped, switch it fully off and back on one time. Liberty lists a tripped breaker, GFCI or blown fuse first among reasons a pump will not start; Keen lists a tripped breaker and power interruption. If it trips again, leave it off.

  3. Step 3: Give a tripped overload its time

Keen says a tripped motor overload resets in 20 to 30 minutes. If the pump stopped after a heavy run, that wait is part of the diagnosis. Keep water use down while you wait.

  4. Step 4: Stop sending water, then call

Stop water use and contact whoever services your pump. Call BCSS promptly for flashing red on its documented Keen station. Gulf Shores Utilities asks for a call at any red alarm.

Possible causes

Engraving of a gentleman leaning close to a tall grinder pump, peering at it with his ear near the casing.
Plate XLII. His Grace has asked it twice, politely. The pump has not replied.

These are examples from the service manuals for a pump that does not start.

  • No power: a tripped breaker, blown fuse, a GFCI that tripped, a poor connection or a neighborhood outage (Keen, Liberty).
  • Low or wrong voltage. Liberty says to check wiring if voltage is under 108 volts and to remove any extension cord.
  • A float that cannot rise or is defective (Keen, Liberty, Barnes), or on E-One a pressure-switch level signal that is not reaching the panel.
  • Start components. Keen lists blown start switch or capacitors; Zoeller lists the capacitor. A single-phase pump with a dead start capacitor hums and does not turn.
  • A tripped motor overload, which Keen says resets in 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Solids lodged in the inlet (Keen), an obstructed impeller (Liberty) or a locked impeller (Barnes).
  • The selector switch left in Off (Liberty), which happens after someone else has been in the panel.
  • Insect or grease trouble local utilities mention: Gulf Shores Utilities lists grease or powdered soap scum on the floats and fire ants among the reasons grinder pumps fail, and asks customers to use liquid soaps.

Not turning on automatically

If the pump runs when a technician forces it in Hand but never starts on its own, the problem is the level control, not the motor: a float hung on the basin wall, a float that has lost its tether position, grease on a float stem, or an E-One pressure switch that has lost its air column. On a Keen simplex panel there are three floats, Off, On and Alarm; if On fails the pump waits until Alarm, and you get an alarm every cycle instead of a quiet pump.

Brand notes

E-One: the owners guide tells owners not to attempt repair. The Sentry Protect Plus panel can also stop the pump on purpose, showing Trouble, for brown-out, run-dry or over-pressure, so a pump that is not running with an amber light is a protected pump, not a dead one.

Keen: the overload self-resets; the level sensors may need cleaning if grease obstructs them (BCSS user guide). Keen's own field-service limit is the impeller and retainer plate; everything else goes to an authorized center.

Liberty PRG: runs on a standard 20-amp circuit; the manual's first checks are the cord, the selector switch, the breaker or GFCI, voltage and an extension cord.

Barnes: if the pump will not run, the manual has an electrician measure motor current; within 20 percent of locked-rotor amps means the impeller is probably locked, zero amps means the overload may be tripped. That is the test, and it is not a homeowner one.

What we check

Supply voltage at the panel and under load; breaker, fuses and the GFCI where fitted; running and locked-rotor current; the overload and heat sensor; start capacitors and relay on single-phase pumps; float or pressure-switch operation and position; the inlet and cutter for a jam; the motor windings for a short or water; and on E-One, whether a Trouble condition is what stopped the pump.

If the power is out

Without electricity the pump cannot move wastewater, and Keen and Barnes add that it cannot sound an alarm either. Keep water to a minimum. E-One asks owners not to disconnect power to the unit; when power returns, the alarm may sound until the station clears, and E-One says to call if it is still on more than an hour later. Our power outage guide covers generators, including the BCSS panel's generator receptacle.

When it is an emergency

If sewage appears at a fixture or the lid, stop using water and call your utility or pump service provider. If the panel is smoking or actively sparking, get to safety and call 911.

Questions people ask

Why is my grinder pump not turning on?

Usually power: a tripped breaker, a GFCI, a blown fuse or an outage. After that, a float or level sensor that is stuck or greasy, failed start capacitors, a tripped overload (Keen: wait 20 to 30 minutes), or a jammed inlet. Reset the house breaker once; the rest is technician work.

How do I know whether my grinder pump has power?

Any light on the outside of the panel means power is reaching it. A dark panel means the breaker, the supply or the panel itself. Do not open the enclosure to find out more.

Can a grinder pump just stop working with no warning?

Yes. A power loss, a lightning strike or a locked cutter stops a pump instantly. More often there is a run-up of warning signs, covered on the page about telling whether a pump is bad.

Who do I call when my grinder pump stops on BCSS or Gulf Shores Utilities?

Call BCSS promptly if its documented Keen station is flashing red. Call Gulf Shores Utilities at any red alarm. The utility can tell you when an independent repair is appropriate.

Still not right?

Tell us what the light is doing and which utility you are on. We reply with the next safe step.
