Grinder pump repair

Grinder Pump Gents repairs residential grinder pumps in Fairhope, Daphne, Point Clear and across Baldwin and Mobile counties where the sewer utility allows a private plumber. We check the controls, level sensors, pump and discharge to find out what failed before recommending a repair.

Have your sewer bill handy when you call. It identifies the utility that serves your address. Baldwin County Sewer Service lets homeowners hire a plumber for repairs and installs replacement pumps through its own crews.

Inside a grinder pump station

This installation photo shows two yellow floats beside the discharge pipe. On a repair visit, a technician checks whether the level controls signal the pump and whether the station moves wastewater before recommending any parts.

What a repair visit covers

A grinder station can often be repaired by replacing an individual part. Possible repairs depend on the equipment, the manufacturer’s service limits and what the technician finds. Examples include:

  • Start capacitors and relays, which Keen lists among the reasons a pump will not run and BCSS notes can be serviced in the field on its Keen stations.
  • Floats or level sensors fouled with grease, hung on the basin wall, or failed outright.
  • Seals. A red seal-leak light on a Keen or Myers panel means water has passed the lower seal; Myers says to pull the pump at once to save the motor.
  • The stator on a progressing cavity pump, which Keen and Barnes both list as a cause of a pump that runs but moves nothing.
  • Cutters and impellers on centrifugal grinders, which Keen names as the one field repair it permits on its pumps.
  • Check valves stuck closed or installed backwards, and the discharge fitting at the tank.
  • Panel components: contactors, alarm circuits, the overload relay and lightning-damaged boards.

What we check, and what you should leave alone

Diagnosis starts at the panel with the enclosure open only to a technician: supply voltage, breaker and fuses, the overload relay, the heat sensor and the start components, which is Keen's own panel troubleshooting order. Then the running current. E-One specifies 5 to 8 amps at 240 volts for a healthy pump, and a reading well outside that range points to a jammed cutter, a torn stator or a failing motor before the lid is ever lifted. Then the level control, the check valve, and finally the pump itself, pulled by its lifting cord or rail.

The owner's part is smaller and safer: silence the horn, stop the water, and watch the light. E-One prints DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE UNIT YOURSELF in its owner guide, and the electrical reason is specific. Keen warns that switching off the breaker is not enough to make the motor safe; the motor leads have to be disconnected inside the panel. Liberty adds that on 208 and 230 volt installs one side of the line stays live whether the float is on or off.

Where repair is allowed, by utility

On Baldwin County Sewer Service the pump is the property owner's and BCSS says a homeowner may contact BCSS or a plumber to schedule a repair; BCSS also repairs pumps on its own system, so you have a choice. Gulf Shores Utilities puts operation and maintenance on the customer but asks to be called whenever the red light shows, so make that call too. Riviera Utilities and the City of Foley will not repair anything on the customer's side, which leaves it to you and your plumber. Fairhope, North Baldwin Utilities, Loxley and the City of Orange Beach all put maintenance on the owner, and Daphne's code says neither the city nor its utilities board maintains these pumps. MAWSS answers the question of whether it will fix a broken grinder pump with one word: no.

The exceptions are the utility-maintained systems. South Alabama Utilities maintains the pump and panel on its effluent systems, MCWS technicians service the Barnes stations in south Mobile County, and MAWSS maintains the pumps in its decentralized subdivisions. On those, the repair call goes to the utility.

Repair notes by brand

E-One: the pump is a removable core with pressure-switch level sensing, so there are no floats to foul. After a repair a Sentry panel needs no reset; the older Protect panel is reset by switching the pump and alarm breakers off and on together. A Sentry Protect Plus panel that shows Trouble has shut the pump down for a reason it names: brownout, run-dry, over-pressure from a closed valve or blockage, or a run-time limit.

Keen: the only field disassembly Keen allows is replacing the impeller and retainer plate; anything deeper goes to an authorized service center. The motor overload resets itself in 20 to 30 minutes, which is why a pump sometimes restarts on its own. A red light on the panel can be the seal-leak probe rather than high water.

Liberty: restricts disassembly to its own authorized centers, so a ProVore with an internal fault is replaced as a unit. Its manual's first checks are the breaker or GFCI, voltage under 108 volts, and any extension cord in the circuit.

Myers and Hydromatic: both require their own control panels and monitored seal and heat sensors. Myers says a second trip seconds after a reset points to a short in the motor or control box, and a trip following an electrical storm suggests lightning damage.

Goulds: if the pump runs but does not pump, the manual says it is probably air locked, and a 230 volt panel missing its neutral will not run the 115 volt controls.

Signs the pump needs repair rather than replacement

These symptoms can point to a repairable component. The rest of the station’s condition helps determine whether a repair makes sense.

  • The alarm comes on and clears itself, or comes on more and more often (E-One says frequent alarms warrant service).
  • A seal-leak light with the pump still running.
  • The pump runs constantly or cycles every few minutes.
  • The breaker tripped once and held after a single reset.
  • A new noise, rattle or hum from the tank.
  • The pump runs but the level does not drop.

How the visit goes

  1. Step 1: Confirm the utility and the brand

Before the visit we settle who owns the pump, whether the utility wants a call, and what panel and pump you have.

  2. Step 2: Panel first

Voltage, breaker, fuses, overload, start components, lights and amp draw, with the enclosure open only to the technician.

  3. Step 3: Level control

Floats or pressure switches are tested through a full cycle, and grease or debris on them is cleared.

  4. Step 4: Pull and inspect the pump

The pump or core comes out on its cord or rail. Seals, stator or cutter, check valve and discharge fitting are inspected.

  5. Step 5: Review the estimate

We explain the failed part, which repairs are possible and what the work will cost before you approve it.

  6. Step 6: Repair and test

The failed part is repaired or replaced, the station is run through a full fill-and-pump cycle, and the alarm is tested.

  7. Step 7: Explain and record

You see the part, hear what caused it, and get a written note of what was done and what to watch.

Questions people ask

Can a grinder pump be repaired, or does it always have to be replaced?

A failed capacitor, float, check valve or panel relay may be repairable without replacing the pump. A pump is replaced when the motor is gone, the stator or cutter is worn out, or your utility's specification requires a different type.

I am on BCSS with an E-One pump. Who repairs it?

Either BCSS or a plumber of your choice; BCSS says both are fine and that it will keep servicing existing E-One pumps on its system. Only a replacement has to go through BCSS.

Is this the same as sewer line repair?

No. Sewer line repair usually means a gravity pipe from the house to the street. A grinder station has a small pressure line instead, and we repair that; see the discharge line page. For a gravity sewer with no pump, ask for drain or sewer line service.

Why does a red light mean different things on different pumps?

The meaning depends on the model and the indicator label. For example, E/One’s D-Series specification describes a red high-level alarm lens, while some Keen and Myers panels have a separate seal warning. Tell the utility or technician the exact model before interpreting the light.

Do you repair residential and septic grinder pumps?

Residential grinder pumps on pressure sewers, yes, in both counties. A grinder pump feeding a septic tank is a different matter: Zoeller advises against grinder pumps anywhere in a septic system, and effluent pumps on septic systems are not part of this company's confirmed services.
