Grinder pump problems, sorted by symptom
Short answer
Stop using water, silence the horn at its button if the panel has one, and call your sewer utility first if it asks for that (BCSS and Gulf Shores Utilities do). Then pick your symptom below. Never remove the panel cover, handle wiring, or enter the basin.
Pick the symptom
- Alarm going offThe alarm just started. What it means, the four steps E-One gives owners, and who to call first on BCSS and Gulf Shores Utilities.
- Alarm keeps going offAn alarm that returns is a different problem from a one-off. Rain, leaking fixtures, check valves and greasy level sensors, in order.
- Red light on, no soundSteady or flashing red with no horn. On some brands a red light is a seal-leak warning, not high water. Why BCSS pumps after 2010 have no horn.
- Silence or reset the alarmWhere the silence button is on E-One and Keen panels, what a reset does and does not fix, and why you should not reset breakers twice.
- Pump not workingA dead pump: house breaker, lost power, a stuck float, tripped overload or a blocked inlet, by brand.
- Running constantlyA pump that never shuts off: floats, Hand mode, air lock, excess inflow or a clogged grinder. How often a grinder pump should run.
- Tripping the breakerReset once, never twice. Shorts, lightning, damaged cords, a jammed impeller and the circuit sizes each brand requires.
- Sewage smellA grinder pump should not smell. The 10-minute clean-water test, blocked vents, stagnation and grease.
- Backing up or overflowingSewage in the house or at the basin. Stop the water, use the storage window, and what blocks a system during an alarm.
- Humming, rattling, grindingWhich noises are normal and which mean a jammed cutter, worn bearings, a bent shaft or a chattering contactor.
- Water around the lidWet ground without rain, a broken discharge pipe (the one time E-One says to cut power) and ground water in the basin.
- Gurgling or slow drainsAir lock, a stuck check valve, a blocked vent, or a house drain clog that has nothing to do with the pump.
- Sparks or burning smellKeep clear of smoke or active sparking and call 911. See how to respond to electrical symptoms safely.
- Is the pump bad?The warning signs the manufacturers list before a pump fails, and what happens when it does.
- Troubleshooting guideThe whole checklist on one page: what you may do, by brand, and what only a technician should touch.
- Running but not pumpingMotor runs, level stays high: air lock, a closed valve, a backwards check valve, a torn stator or too much head.
- Clogged grinder pumpWhat jams a grinder (wipes, grease, rags, floss), how a clog shows up at the panel, and why unclogging is not a homeowner job.
- Sewage ejector pump problemsIndoor basin pumps: float switches, alarms, smells, short cycling and battery backup, from the Zoeller and Liberty tables.
- Sewage in the yardWet, smelly ground and you are not sure what you have. How to tell a grinder basin from a gravity line break, and who handles each.
Grinder pump problems almost always announce themselves one of three ways: an alarm or red light at the panel, sewage that backs up or surfaces, or a pump that runs wrong (constantly, loudly, or not at all). Find your symptom below. Each page gives the safe steps a homeowner can take, the likely causes in order, what a technician checks, and when it is an emergency.

How these pages work
Each symptom page follows the same order: what the symptom means, the safe steps you can take right now, possible causes drawn from the manufacturers’ troubleshooting tables, what we check on site, brand-specific notes where the manufacturer documents them, and the point at which it becomes an emergency.
Homeowner steps are limited to what the pump makers themselves tell owners to do: limit water, press the silence button, check the breaker at the house panel, and call. Everything inside the control box or the basin is technician work.
Who to call first
If the utility maintains the station, call it directly. Report flashing red on the Keen station covered by the BCSS manual promptly, and any red alarm to Gulf Shores Utilities.
Who may repair, replace or install the pump also differs by utility. On BCSS, pumps have been bought from and installed by BCSS from January 1, 2026, so our work in BCSS areas is repair. Check your utility's rule before paying anyone.
- Some stations use a visual alarm without a horn, including BCSS units documented that way. A flashing light can be an alarm even when the panel is quiet.
- E-One stations hold roughly a day of emergency storage, depending on water use. Treat that as the repair window, not a cushion.
- Brand changes the diagnosis. E-One senses level with pressure switches; Keen, Liberty, Zoeller and Barnes use floats, which can hang up or get coated in grease.
Questions people ask
What are the most common grinder pump problems?
Across the manufacturer troubleshooting tables, the repeat offenders are things that should not have gone down the drain (grease, wipes, rags), level sensors or floats that stick, check valves that leak or stick, lost power, and failed seals. The symptom pages below cover each one.
Can I fix a grinder pump myself?
No. E-One's owners guide tells owners in capitals not to attempt repair themselves, and Keen, Liberty and Myers restrict disassembly to authorized service. What you can do safely is limit water, silence the horn, check the house breaker once, and call.
Do you cover sewage ejector pumps and lift stations too?
Yes. Brandon services grinder pumps, sewage ejector pumps and residential lift stations. The ejector page below covers indoor basins; lift stations have their own section of the site.
