Who owns my grinder pump? Look it up by town

Short answer

On most systems in Baldwin and Mobile counties the homeowner owns the grinder pump. Who may repair or replace it, and who to call first when the alarm sounds, changes by utility. Choose your town below for the rule and its source.

Type the street address, or just the town.

We use this only to find your utility, through the US Census Bureau and OpenStreetMap. We do not keep it.

Who is responsible for your grinder pump depends on which sewer utility serves your address, and in these two counties that answer ranges from fully yours to fully the utility's. Choose your town and the lookup returns who owns the pump, who may repair it, who may replace or install it, and who to call first when the red light comes on, with a link to the utility's own document.

The rules were read from each utility's published specifications, ordinances and FAQ pages on the date shown with each answer. Where a utility has published nothing, the tool says that rather than guessing.

Every town

A boundary says where a utility works, not that a given house is connected. The name on your sewer bill settles it.

What the answer means

Each result has four parts, and they do not always point the same way.

  • OwnsWhose pump it is. On MAWSS, and on BCSS, Gulf Shores, Riviera, North Baldwin, Loxley and Orange Beach, it is the property owner's; on South Alabama Utilities effluent systems and MCWS stations the utility maintains it; in MAWSS decentralized subdivisions MAWSS maintains it.
  • RepairWho may fix it. Open to the owner's plumber on every owner-maintained system; BCSS also repairs pumps on its own system.
  • Replace or installWho may put a new pump in. BCSS only, on BCSS, as of January 1, 2026; the city only in Orange Beach; the owner's plumber to the utility's specification elsewhere, with written approval on Riviera and in Foley and a master plumber's certification in Fairhope.
  • Call firstBCSS promptly for a flashing red alarm on its documented Keen station; Gulf Shores Utilities for any red alarm; SAU and MCWS for their stations. When unsure, confirm who services the pump before booking.

Towns that sit on more than one system

A town name is a starting point, not a boundary. Parts of the Loxley area may be BCSS franchise territory. Riviera supplies sewer only inside the City of Foley. Orange Beach's sewer reaches some county locations, including low-pressure lines to Ono Island and the Miflin Creek area. Daphne Utilities serves Daphne, Montrose and parts of Spanish Fort, while Spanish Fort's city limits are listed as BCSS. Where the tool shows two possible utilities, your sewer bill settles it.

Utilities with no published rule

Robertsdale, Saraland, Prichard, Chickasaw, Satsuma and Creola have not published who owns or repairs grinder pumps on their systems, and Bayou La Batre and Dauphin Island have only partial information. The tool shows that, and a service request with your address gets the rule confirmed with the utility before anyone drives out.

Questions people ask

Is the grinder pump the homeowner's responsibility?

On most systems in both counties, yes: BCSS, Gulf Shores Utilities, Fairhope, Riviera, North Baldwin, Loxley, Orange Beach and MAWSS all put ownership and maintenance on the owner. The exceptions are SAU, MCWS and MAWSS decentralized subdivisions, where the utility maintains the pump.

If I own the pump, can I hire any plumber?

For repairs, yes, on every owner-maintained system. For a replacement, BCSS and Orange Beach reserve installation to themselves, and other utilities set specifications and approvals the plumber must meet.

Why does BCSS repair pumps it says it does not own?

BCSS's FAQ disclaims responsibility for pump systems on private property, and its grinder page separately says it repairs grinder pumps on its system as a service. Both are true: the pump is yours, and BCSS is one of the people you can hire to fix it.
