Grinder pump troubleshooting guide
Short answer
Homeowner troubleshooting starts by stopping water use and noting which indicator is on. Call the provider for your utility and panel; leave the lid and enclosure closed. Technician troubleshooting: current readings, floats, capacitors, check valve, cutter, seals. Match your symptom to a page below.
Grinder pump troubleshooting for a homeowner comes down to four moves the manufacturers permit: limit water, silence the horn, check the breaker at the house panel once, and call. Everything else in the manufacturers' tables, from amp readings to float adjustment, is written for technicians. This guide puts both lists on one page so you can see where the line is, then points each symptom to its own page.
Use it as a checklist. It is not a repair manual, and the brands are explicit that it should not be.
Safe steps, in order
Nothing here opens the panel or the basin. If a step does not clear it, stop and make the call.
Step 1: Limit water
Every brand's owner guidance starts here. E-One: limit water usage during an alarm. Keen/BCSS: stop water use immediately. Barnes: keep water use to a minimum when power is lost.
Step 2: Silence the horn at the external control
E-One: the button under the panel. Keen: the toggle pushed down. The light stays on in both cases.
Step 3: Check the house breaker once
Liberty's first checks for a pump that will not start are the breaker, GFCI or fuse, and removing any extension cord. Reset the grinder breaker at your house panel one time. A second trip means stop.
Step 4: Utility first where required, then service
Call BCSS promptly for the flashing red alarm on its documented Keen station. Gulf Shores Utilities wants to hear about any red alarm. On utility-maintained stations, call the utility. If unsure who handles the pump, check your sewer bill or use the utility lookup.

- Smoke or active sparkingMove away and call 911. See the electrical symptoms page.
- Runs but does not pumpAir lock, valves, backwards check valve, stator, head. Running but not pumping page.
- CloggedWhat jams a grinder and why it is not a DIY unclog. Clogged page.
Homeowner-safe steps, by brand
Quoted or closely paraphrased from each manufacturer's owner guidance.
- E-OnePress the button under the alarm panel to silence; limit water; wait an hour; if the light is still on, call. Do not attempt to repair the unit yourself. Do not disconnect power except for a broken discharge pipe. Do not touch the valves, block the vent or cover the lid.
- Keen (BCSS stations)On the flashing red light, stop water use immediately and call your utility provider. Level sensors may need cleaning, which BCSS or a plumber does.
- Liberty ProVoreCheck for a tripped breaker, GFCI or blown fuse, and remove any extension cord. An installed pump left idle more than a month should be run through the breaker monthly.
- Barnes and Keen on power lossWithout power the pump can neither pump nor alarm; keep water use to a minimum.
- Gulf Shores Utilities customersContact the Board whenever the red alarm shows. BCSS Keen: call BCSS promptly for a flashing red high-level alarm.
Technician-only checks
The rest of the troubleshooting tables. Listed so you know what a visit involves, not so you can do it.
- Running and locked-rotor current. E-One: 5 to 8 amps at 240 volts. Barnes: current within 20 percent of locked-rotor amps means a locked impeller.
- Voltage under load, and the panel's voltage monitor on Keen.
- Start capacitors and relay, overload relay and motor heat sensor (Keen panel checklist).
- Float position, tether and condition; E-One pressure-switch tubing and equalizer.
- Check valve operation and orientation; discharge and street valves.
- Cutter, ring and inlet for jams and wear; stator on progressive cavity pumps.
- Seal chamber moisture and motor insulation resistance.
- Panel reset on E-One Protect panels: pump and alarm breakers cycled together after service.
Common grinder pump problems, in one paragraph
What are some common problems with grinder pumps? Grease and wipes jamming the cutter and coating the floats; floats or level sensors that stick or drift; check valves that leak or stick so pumped sewage returns to the basin; air lock after a pump change; seals that let water reach the motor; storm damage to panels and motors; rain and ground water overloading the basin; and lost power. Every one of those has a symptom page above.

Grinder pump float not working
Floats fail three ways: hung on the basin wall or a cord, coated in grease so they do not swing, or electrically dead. The symptom depends on which float: a dead On float means the pump waits for the Alarm float and you get an alarm every cycle; a dead Off float means the pump never stops; a dead Alarm float means no warning at all. E-One uses pressure switches instead, with their own failure modes. Float and level sensor repair is its own service.

Questions people ask
How do I fix a grinder pump myself?
You do not, and the manufacturers say so: E-One in capitals, Keen by limiting field work to the impeller plate, Zoeller by telling owners not to service or disassemble the pump. What you can do is limit water, silence the horn, reset the house breaker once, and call.
Why is my grinder pump not working?
Power, signal or mechanics: a tripped breaker or outage; a float or level sensor that is not calling the pump; or a jammed cutter, failed capacitor or tripped overload. The not working page ranks them by brand.
What is the first thing to check when a grinder pump alarms?
Stop water use first. Note the utility, the panel model and the light label if safe to do so. Call for guidance that matches your equipment. Do not cycle the breaker to clear the alarm.
Does troubleshooting differ between E-One and Keen pumps?
At the homeowner level, only in where the silence control is and whether BCSS wants the first call. Underneath, yes: E-One senses level with pressure switches and resets differently by panel; Keen uses floats, a self-resetting overload and a seal-leak light. That is why the brand on the enclosure is the first thing we ask.
