Grinder pumps on South Alabama Utilities and Citronelle (effluent systems): who owns, who repairs, who to call
Short answer
SAU maintains it. SAU's brochure says the effluent sewer system is serviced and maintained by South Alabama Utilities, which maintains the pump and control panel and pumps the tank. Repair: SAU. Replacement: not published; ask SAU. Alarm: press the red light on the panel, then call SAU, (251) 649-4316.
If your home is on a South Alabama Utilities effluent sewer, SAU services and maintains the pump and control panel and pumps the tank, so for most SAU customers in Citronelle and Semmes the first call is SAU, not a plumber. These are effluent (STEP) systems rather than grinder pumps, and the utility says so in its own homeowner material.
South Alabama Utilities and Citronelle Utilities are one organisation: the Utilities Board of the Town of Citronelle doing business as SAU. Its brochure and homeowner manual are quoted and linked below.

What that means in practice
On SAU’s effluent program, call SAU about the pump, tank or control panel.
- RepairSAU. The brochure says SAU maintains the pump and control panel.
- ReplacementNot published. Since SAU maintains the pump, ask SAU before paying anyone to replace it.
- InstallationSAU runs the program; it is not a homeowner purchase in the published material. Ask SAU about availability and tap fees for your lot.
- AlarmThe brochure's step is to press the red light on the front of the panel, then phone SAU. Semmes office (251) 649-4316; Citronelle office (251) 866-2365.
What we do in SAU's area, and what we do not
We do not repair, replace or install the pump, control panel or tank on an SAU-maintained effluent system. SAU's brochure says SAU does that, and a private plumber opening an SAU-maintained station would be working on the utility's equipment. Call SAU.
For a separate indoor sewage ejector, ask us about pump service. For a general drain or septic problem, call a provider that handles that work. If you are unsure whether the pump is part of SAU’s effluent program, confirm the connection with SAU first.
Permits
SAU publishes no permit process for homeowners on its effluent program, which follows from the utility maintaining the equipment. For house-side plumbing, Citronelle and Semmes building permits are handled by the respective city offices or Mobile County, depending on the address.
System type: effluent (STEP), not grinder
SAU's manual says homes on its program are on an Orenco effluent sewer. In a septic tank effluent pump (STEP) system, a tank on the lot settles solids and a small pump sends the clarified liquid to SAU's main. A grinder pump, by contrast, grinds everything that leaves the house and pushes the slurry to the main. The two fail differently and are serviced differently, which is why SAU keeps its stations under its own crews.
Where SAU provides sewer
SAU's effluent sewer serves subdivisions in the Citronelle and Semmes areas, and its history page describes service in Mobile County and part of Washington County. SAU's own page on effluent sewers says to call for availability in your area. Semmes is mixed: SAU effluent subdivisions, a small MAWSS sewer pocket and a lot of septic, so check your bill. Citronelle's sewer is SAU under its own name as the Citronelle utilities board.

Questions people ask
Is Citronelle Utilities the same as South Alabama Utilities?
Yes. SAU is the Utilities Board of the Town of Citronelle doing business as South Alabama Utilities. One organisation, two names.
Who maintains the pump on an SAU effluent sewer?
SAU. Its brochure says the effluent system is serviced and maintained by South Alabama Utilities, which checks the system regularly, maintains the pump and control panel, and pumps the tank when necessary.
What do I do when the alarm goes off on an SAU system?
Press the red light on the front of the panel, which silences the alarm. Then call SAU: (251) 649-4316 in Semmes or (251) 866-2365 in Citronelle. Those are SAU's own instructions.
Do I have a grinder pump if I am on SAU?
Probably not. SAU's homeowner manual says homes on its program are on an effluent sewer, where the tank holds solids and the pump moves liquid only. If you have a privately owned grinder pump outside SAU's program, that is different; ask SAU which you have.
Can a plumber work on my SAU pump?
Not on the SAU-maintained pump, panel or tank; that is SAU's equipment to service. For a different problem inside the home, a general drain service can check the fixtures and drain line. We service separate residential sewage ejector pumps.
