How to silence or reset a grinder pump alarm
Short answer
Silence: press the button under an E-One panel, or push a Keen panel's outside toggle down. The light stays on until the basin level drops. Reset: E-One Sentry panels need none; Keen resets automatically as the level falls. Breaker and overload resets are technician steps. Never switch the alarm off at its breaker.
To silence a grinder pump alarm, press the silence control on the outside of the panel once: on E-One it is the button under the alarm panel, on Keen it is the outside toggle pushed down. The horn stops and the light stays on. That is the whole homeowner reset; everything beyond it either happens by itself when the level drops or belongs to a technician.
This page covers silencing, what reset means on each brand, and the resets you should not attempt.
Safe steps, in order
Nothing here opens the panel or the basin. If a step does not clear it, stop and make the call.
Step 1: Find the silence control on the outside of the enclosure
E-One: a push-type silence switch under the panel, next to the horn. Keen: an external toggle; up tests the alarm, down silences it. Separate alarm boxes usually have a silence button on the face. If you cannot find one without removing a cover, stop; the cover stays on.
Step 2: Press it once
The horn stops. The light does not, and it is not supposed to. E-One's wording is that the light stays lit; Keen's is that silencing leaves the light on and the horn resets itself for the next alarm.
Step 3: Stop water use and check your system’s instructions
Before waiting for a light to clear, check your provider’s instructions. The flashing high-level alarm on the documented BCSS Keen panel calls for a prompt call to BCSS. Gulf Shores Utilities wants any red alarm reported.
Step 4: If the light stays on, request service rather than resetting anything
A light that stays on or returns needs to be checked. Tell the service provider the panel model and indicator label. Do not cycle the breaker to clear the alarm.
Silence is not reset
Silencing only stops the horn. The alarm condition, a high level in the basin, is unchanged, and the visual alarm stays on until the level falls. E-One's spec describes exactly that sequence: audible alarm silenced with the external push-to-silence button, visual alarm lit until the level drops below the alarm switch off setting.
Reset, on most residential panels, is not something an owner does. E-One says Sentry panels require no reset at all. The older E-One Protect panel is reset by cycling its pump and alarm breakers together, off then on, and that is listed in the installation instructions as a technician step after testing, with the note that any trouble or alarm after reset means contacting local service. Keen's alarm resets itself when the level drops.

The reset buttons you should leave alone
Each of these sits inside an enclosure, and each has a rule from its manufacturer.
- Motor overload reset (Myers)Push the red reset button one time; if the overload opens again after a brief run, Myers calls the pump damaged. A single press is a technician decision, a second press is a diagnosis.
- Pump and alarm breakers inside an E-One Protect panelCycled together, by the technician, after service.
- Keen overloadResets itself in 20 to 30 minutes. There is nothing to press, and the wait is the reset.
- Hand-Off-Auto switch (Keen, Myers, Liberty, Barnes)Switching to Hand forces the pump to run until someone switches it back, which is how pumps get left running dry or pumping into a closed valve. Not an owner control.
The one reset you may do: the house breaker, once
If the panel is completely dark, no lights at all, the grinder circuit at your house electrical panel may have tripped. Liberty lists a tripped breaker or GFCI among the reasons a pump will not start, and Keen lists a tripped breaker first. Switch it fully off and back on one time. If it trips again, leave it off and call; Myers reads a second trip within seconds as a likely short in the motor or control box.
How to turn off a grinder pump alarm (and why you should not)
People search for how to turn the alarm off, meaning the circuit, not the horn. Do not. E-One requires an alarm device on every installation, no exceptions, and Liberty quotes the plumbing code requirement for an audio and visual alarm. The alarm is what stands between a slow pump and sewage in the house. Silence the horn as many times as you like; leave the alarm powered.
E-One also says not to disconnect power to the unit at all, with a single exception for a broken discharge pipe.
What we check when an alarm will not clear
Why a level stays high is the real question. On site that means supply and running current, the level controls (E-One pressure switches, floats elsewhere), the start components, the check valve and discharge valves, and the grinder inlet. On panels with a seal-leak or trouble light, which circuit lit the lamp.

Questions people ask
Where is the grinder pump reset button?
On most residential panels there is no owner reset button, only the silence control. The red reset button Myers describes is the motor overload inside the control box, limited to one press. E-One Sentry panels need no reset; Keen resets automatically.
How do I silence a grinder pump alarm at night?
Stop water use, and use a marked external silence button only if you can reach it safely. Check the system’s call instructions even at night. Call BCSS promptly for the documented Keen high-level flash; Gulf Shores Utilities asks you to report any red alarm. For sewage backup or overflow, call for help now.
How do I reset a submersible pump?
You generally do not. Submersible grinder and sewage pumps restart on their own when the overload cools (Keen: 20 to 30 minutes) or the level control calls for them. Resets inside the panel are technician steps. A dark panel does not prove the breaker tripped. Call for help if you cannot identify the circuit safely.
Will resetting the breaker fix the alarm?
Do not cycle a breaker to clear an active alarm. If the panel is dark and the labeled house breaker is visibly tripped, check the model instructions first and only approach a dry, safe house panel. If the circuit trips again, leave it off and get help.
