Grinder pump installation
Grinder pump installation puts a complete sewage grinder pump system in the ground: tank, pump, control panel with alarm, check valve and anti-siphon device, and the small pressure line to the utility's connection at the property line. Grinder Pump Gents installs residential grinder pump systems for new construction, additions and septic-to-sewer connections wherever the utility lets the owner's plumber do the work.
That means Fairhope, Gulf Shores Utilities, Riviera's Foley customers, North Baldwin, Loxley, Daphne and MAWSS. Baldwin County Sewer Service has installed every new pump on its own system itself from January 1, 2026, and in Orange Beach the city code reserves installation to the city. On those two systems we can advise and repair but not install.

When a house needs a grinder pump
A gravity sewer needs the house drain to sit above the main. Where it does not, because the lot is low, the main is a small-diameter pressure line, or the house is being connected to sewer from septic, a grinder station is the usual answer. Fairhope's code requires a gravity sewer unless the water and sewer superintendent specifically approves a grinder system, so the first step there is that approval. Daphne does not accept multi-home low-pressure systems without Daphne Utilities' approval. Riviera accepts both grinder stations and septic tank effluent (STEP) systems on its low-pressure sewer in Foley.
What a residential grinder pump system includes
The components, sizes and installation requirements depend on the model and utility.
- A tank, 70 gallons on an E-One DH071, 100 gallons on a current E-One WH101, 24 by 60 inches on a BCSS Keen station, and at least 115 gallons on Gulf Shores Utilities or in Orange Beach and 150 gallons in Foley.
- The pump, chosen to the utility's head and flow requirement: 7 gallons a minute at 185 feet in North Baldwin and Loxley, 10 gallons a minute at 90 feet with 2 horsepower in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.
- Level control: floats on Keen, Liberty, Zoeller and Barnes; pressure switches on E-One.
- A control panel with a high level alarm. E-One requires an alarm device on every installation with no exceptions, Liberty cites the plumbing code requiring an audible and visual alarm, and Daphne specifies a light and a sound.
- A check valve and an anti-siphon valve. E-One requires its stainless Uni-Lateral check valve between the station and the street main; Gulf Shores and Orange Beach require a check valve and anti-siphon device on the discharge.
- A dedicated circuit. E-One specifies a dedicated 30 amp breaker with ground and separate neutral; Liberty's ProVore runs on a 20 amp circuit and its 2 horsepower Omnivore on 30 amps.
- A generator receptacle where required. Riviera requires one with a manual transfer breaker; E-One offers a 20 amp, 250 volt receptacle with automatic transfer as an option.
- The pressure line, 1-1/4 inch to the property line connection in Loxley's specification; Orange Beach wants a bigger building sewer, 1-3/4 inch inside diameter minimum, in Class 200 PVC or SDR11 polyethylene pipe.
Permits, forms and approvals
Fairhope requires a building permit and, before a certificate of occupancy, its Grinder Pump Installation form completed and signed by the state licensed master plumber of record, certifying the pressure test, the elevation and that the tank and pump meet the specifications for the usage and the subdivision. Brandon Byrd holds that certificate. Riviera and the City of Foley require written approval from both before any low-pressure connection, and warn that unapproved connections may have to be removed. Gulf Shores Utilities requires the General Manager's written authorization for any pump outside its acceptable types. North Baldwin requires NBU's approval of any STEP components before installation.
Installation details that matter on this coast
Ground water. A buried tank floats if it is empty and the water table is high. E-One's DH152 duplex drawing says concrete ballast may be required; its current DH071 with the Universal Wet Well, the design used for stations built after December 18, 2023, says no concrete ballast is required. Mobile County's MCWS chose a pitless adapter basin package for its Barnes stations specifically because of the high water table.
Future changes to the house. E-One tells owners to contact E-One or the distributor before adding a spa or oversized tub or extending the house over or near the station or its discharge pipe, because the station was sized for the house as it was.
Septic. Zoeller states that it does not recommend grinder pumps in any part of a septic system. A grinder station belongs on a pressure sewer, not in front of a drain field.

How the visit goes
Step 1: Utility approval first
The utility's specification, approval letter or superintendent sign-off is secured before anything is ordered, and the building permit is pulled where the city requires one.
Step 2: Design the station
Tank size, pump curve, panel, alarm, check valve, generator provision and pipe size are chosen against the utility's published minimums and the house's fixture count.
Step 3: Set the tank
Excavated to the drawing depth, bedded, set level, and ballasted where the manufacturer's drawing calls for it.
Step 4: Pipe and wire
Inlet from the house, pressure line to the property-line connection with the required check valve and anti-siphon device, and the dedicated circuit to the panel.
Step 5: Start-up and test
Fill, pump down, alarm test, pressure test and running amps recorded; in Fairhope the installation form is signed and filed.
Check who can do the work
Your sewer utility decides who can repair or replace the pump. Compare the rules by utility before scheduling the work.
Questions people ask
Can a grinder pump be installed for a septic tank?
Zoeller's instructions advise against a grinder pump anywhere in a septic system. Septic tanks use effluent pumps, which is a different service and not one this company has confirmed. A grinder station is for a connection to a pressure sewer.
What size grinder pump does a house need?
The utility sets the floor. In Gulf Shores and Orange Beach a single-family home needs at least 2 horsepower delivering 10 gallons a minute at 90 feet with a 115 gallon tank. In North Baldwin and Loxley the pump must deliver 7 gallons a minute against 185 feet. E-One's 1 horsepower progressing cavity station meets the 185 foot requirement because of its pump type, not its horsepower.
Who has to sign off in Fairhope?
The state licensed master plumber of record signs the city's Grinder Pump Installation form, certifying the pressure test, proper elevation and that the tank and pump meet the specifications. The city requires that form before it issues a certificate of occupancy.
Can I install a grinder pump myself?
Not on BCSS, where pumps are installed by BCSS only, and not in Orange Beach, where the code says installation is by the city only. In Fairhope a master plumber must certify it. On other systems the written approvals and the specification still apply, and the manufacturers tie their coverage to a correct installation and start-up report.
Is a submersible grinder pump the same as a sewage ejector pump?
No. A submersible grinder pump sits in an outdoor tank and grinds waste to push it under pressure into the sewer main. A sewage ejector pump sits in an indoor basin and lifts unground waste to the house's gravity drain. See the ejector installation page if your bathroom is below the sewer line rather than your whole house.
