Grinder pump basin, tank, lid and vent repair
The grinder pump basin is the buried tank that holds sewage between pump cycles, and its lid, riser and vent are what keep rain out, gas vented and the pump reachable. A cracked lid, a sunken riser or a blocked vent turns into alarms when it rains, a smell in the yard, or a pump that cycles all day on ground water. Grinder Pump Gents repairs lids, risers, vents and inlet seals and replaces basins on owner-responsible systems across Baldwin and Mobile counties.
Tank size and material are written into the utility rules here, so a replacement basin is chosen by specification, not by what is on the shelf.

How big is the tank, and why it matters
E-One's DH071 holds 70 gallons and is built for 700 gallons a day from one home; its WH101 holds 100 gallons on the current universal wet well design; its DH152 duplex holds 150 gallons. The Keen station BCSS installs uses a 24 by 60 inch tank, and BCSS's FAQ puts the basin at about 100 gallons. Gulf Shores Utilities and Orange Beach require at least 115 gallons for a single-family home; Riviera requires a fiberglass tank of at least 150 gallons in Foley; North Baldwin and Loxley want a fiberglass well that still stores about 70 gallons after the high level alarm trips. Liberty's packaged simplex systems come in 41 and 70 gallon basins. Total tank capacity includes wastewater already in the tank. Usable reserve depends on the level when the pump stops and the station’s overflow point.
Lid, riser and vent problems
These are the common calls, and most are repairs rather than a new tank.
- Rainwater entering the tank. E-One says an alarm during rain means rainwater may be getting into the system and overloading it, and Keen lists ground water entering the basin as a cause of frequent cycling. A cracked lid, a failed lid gasket or a riser joint below grade is the usual way in.
- A blocked or missing vent. E-One's property care list says do not block the vent; a blocked vent traps gas and can starve the pump of the air it needs to drain the inlet.
- A sunken or buried lid. E-One says to keep the station accessible and clear of plants and not to cover the lid. A lid under sod or mulch is also a lid nobody can open in an emergency.
- A leaking inlet seal where the house drain enters the tank, which lets ground water in and sewage out.
- A tank that has floated or shifted in a high water table, lifting the lid and breaking the discharge fitting.
What we check, and what you should leave alone
We check the lid and gasket, the riser joints, the vent, the inlet seal, the discharge fitting, and the water line inside the tank for signs of ground water, and we test the pump's cycle rate against what the house actually drains. A basin that has lifted is checked for ballast: E-One's DH152 drawing says concrete ballast may be required, while the DH071 on the universal wet well needs none. The homeowner's part is to keep the lid clear and uncovered and to report a smell or a wet lid. Nobody but a technician should open a lid, and nobody at all should enter a basin.
Basin replacement, and where it is allowed
Replacing the whole basin is an installation, and the installation rules apply. On BCSS and in Orange Beach the station is installed by the utility, so a basin replacement there goes through them; lid, riser, vent and seal repairs on an existing station are still the owner's to arrange. On Fairhope, Gulf Shores, Riviera in Foley, North Baldwin, Loxley, Daphne and MAWSS the owner's plumber replaces the basin to the utility's size and material requirement, with the approvals those utilities require for any new connection. On SAU, MCWS and MAWSS decentralized systems the utility maintains the station.
Indoor sewage ejector basins are a smaller version of the same job: Zoeller's residential ejector systems use 30 and 41 gallon basins with a 4 inch inlet, and the residential code requires a gas-tight cover. Lid and cover replacement on those is covered on the ejector pages.

How the visit goes
Step 1: Find the way in
Lid, gasket, riser joints, vent, inlet seal and discharge fitting inspected; the inside water line read for ground water entry.
Step 2: Repair the small things first
Lid, gasket, riser extension, vent cap and seals replaced; the tank cleaned of the grease layer while it is open.
Step 3: Decide on the tank
A cracked, floated or undersized basin is replaced only where the utility allows the owner's plumber to install, to the utility's size and material.
Step 4: Set and connect
New basin bedded and ballasted per the manufacturer's drawing, inlet and discharge reconnected, pump and controls reinstalled.
Step 5: Prove it
Test the cycle and alarm, reseal the lid, and discuss any follow-up needed if the concern was rainwater entering the basin.
Check who can do the work
Your sewer utility decides who can repair or replace the pump. Compare the rules by utility before scheduling the work.
Questions people ask
Why does my grinder pump alarm go off when it rains?
E-One's guide says it means rainwater may be entering and overloading the system. A lid, riser joint, inlet seal or cracked tank could let water in. Have the station checked for the entry point before approving pump replacement.
Can you replace just the lid or the vent cap?
Yes. Lids, gaskets, riser sections and vent caps are stock repairs on an existing station and are the owner's to arrange on every owner-maintained system, including BCSS.
How much does a grinder pump tank hold?
It depends on the station: 70 gallons on an E-One DH071, 100 on a current WH101, about 100 on a BCSS Keen station, and 115 to 150 gallons where Gulf Shores, Orange Beach or Riviera set the minimum. Those are tank sizes or installation minimums. Available storage during an outage depends on how much wastewater was already in the basin.
Is a sewage ejector pump lid the same part?
Same job, smaller tank. Ejector basins sit indoors and the residential code requires a gas-tight cover, so a cracked or warped ejector lid means sewer gas in the house. We replace those as part of ejector pump repair.
