Grinder pump maintenance
Grinder pumps do need maintenance, and the manufacturers say what kind: Liberty's manual calls for a quarterly look at wear, floats, the check valve and panel moisture, with the basin inspected and cleaned every year. Grinder Pump Gents does that work as a scheduled visit for homeowners across Baldwin and Mobile counties, on any system where the owner maintains the pump.
The point is not to polish a sewage pump. It is to catch the three things that end most pumps early: grease on the level controls, a check valve that has started to leak, and water getting into the tank or the panel.

Plate VII. No pump has ever asked to be polished. His Grace does not wait to be asked.

What the manufacturers ask for
The schedule below is built from the manuals, not invented.
- LibertyEvery three months check for corrosion and wear, confirm the floats move freely and switch correctly, check the check valve, and check the panel for moisture; once a year inspect and clean the basin.
- Zoeller, for its sewage systemsInspect every three months.
- Keen, on BCSS stationsThe level sensors may need cleaning, and grease on them will stop the station.
- BCSS, in its FAQA cup of dish soap down a drain monthly and the tank hosed out yearly.
- E-OneThe motor is air filled, so there is no oil to change; before a long absence, run clean water until the pump starts, turn the water off, and let the pump run until it stops.
- Liberty, for seasonal homesA pump idle for more than a month should be run through its breaker monthly to keep the seals lubricated.
What a maintenance visit covers
Panel: moisture, corrosion, the condition of contactors and capacitors, the alarm circuit tested (the outside toggle on a Keen panel tests the alarm when pushed up), and running amps recorded against the last visit. Level controls: each float lifted through its range, or the E-One pressure switch cycled, with any grease or soap scum removed. Gulf Shores Utilities names grease and powdered soap scum on floats as a common cause of failure and recommends liquid soaps. Check valve and anti-siphon valve: inspected for a flap that no longer seats, the cause of a pump that cycles when nothing is running. Tank: the water line checked for ground water entry, the lid seal and vent checked, and the basin cleaned of the grease layer. Discharge: the fitting at the tank and the ground along the line checked for wet spots.
What you can do between visits
These are the homeowner items from the same manuals.
- Keep grease, wipes of any kind, feminine products, rags, hair, cotton swabs, kitty litter and seafood shells out of the drains; that is E-One's list, and the BCSS guide adds mop strings and dental floss.
- Do not rely on a garbage disposal. E-One cautions that disposals do not keep grease and oil out of the system.
- Use liquid soaps rather than powders, per Gulf Shores Utilities.
- Do the vacation flush before you leave, and do not switch the pump breaker off when leaving town; Gulf Shores Utilities says to do that only in a hurricane emergency.
- Keep the lid uncovered and the vent clear, and keep plants and vehicles off the station.
Who maintains the pump on your system
This service is for owner-maintained stations: BCSS, where any plumber may maintain the pump, plus Gulf Shores, Fairhope, Riviera's Foley customers, Bay Minette's North Baldwin Utilities, Loxley, Orange Beach, Daphne and MAWSS in Mobile. On South Alabama Utilities effluent systems SAU checks the system regularly, maintains the pump and panel and pumps the tank itself; MCWS does the same for its Barnes stations; and MAWSS maintains the pumps in its decentralized subdivisions. On those, there is nothing for us to maintain.

How the visit goes
Step 1: Panel and alarm
Enclosure opened by the technician: moisture, corrosion, components, alarm test, amp draw recorded.
Step 2: Level controls
Floats or pressure switches cycled through a full range and cleaned of grease and scum.
Step 3: Valves
Check valve and anti-siphon valve inspected for seating and backflow.
Step 4: Tank and lid
Basin cleaned, water line and ground water entry checked, lid seal and vent cleared.
Step 5: Run and record
Full fill-and-pump cycle timed, findings written down, and anything that will need attention before the next visit flagged.
Check who can do the work
Your sewer utility decides who can repair or replace the pump. Compare the rules by utility before scheduling the work.
Questions people ask
Does a grinder pump really need maintenance?
The manufacturers say so in their manuals: Liberty quarterly and yearly, Zoeller every three months, and Keen warns that grease on the level sensors stops the station. A pump that is never looked at usually announces itself with an alarm at the worst possible time.
What does grinder pump cleaning involve?
Removing the grease layer from the basin walls and the level controls, clearing the vent and lid seal, and rinsing the tank. BCSS suggests hosing its stations out yearly. It is not a chemical treatment; E-One's do-not-flush list includes strong chemicals and paint thinners.
Is there a grinder pump maintenance checklist I can follow?
The homeowner half is on this page: watch what goes down the drain, use liquid soap, do the vacation flush, keep the lid and vent clear, and run an idle pump monthly in a seasonal home. The technician half, panel, floats, valves and basin, is the visit.
Do you offer a maintenance plan?
Book a maintenance visit for your station. We schedule visits individually.
Does this apply to a septic grinder pump?
This service covers grinder stations on pressure sewers. If your pump serves a septic system, call your septic service provider and give them the pump model.
