Grinder pump discharge line repair
The grinder pump discharge line is the small pressure pipe, usually 1-1/4 inch, that carries ground sewage from the tank to the utility's connection at the edge of your property. It is the part of the system that gets cut by a shovel, crushed by a vehicle, or clogged by what should never have been flushed. Grinder Pump Gents locates and repairs discharge lines on grinder stations across Baldwin and Mobile counties.
On BCSS, homeowners arrange repairs to private service lines. Other utilities set their own boundary. Confirm the serving utility before approving work on a line or connection.

Where your line ends and the utility's begins
Riviera's handbook puts the boundary at the shut-off valve and check valve at the property line, with everything on the customer's side, pipes and fittings included, the customer's. North Baldwin Utilities says its pressure sewer responsibility terminates at the customer's property line. Fairhope's code makes the customer responsible for all maintenance of the service line from the connection at the right-of-way up to and within the house. Loxley's specification sizes the service line at 1-1/4 inch out to the property-line connection, and the EPA describes pressure sewers as running under 40 psi through 1-1/4 inch service lines. Orange Beach specifies a larger pipe for its low-pressure building sewers, with an inside diameter of 1-3/4 inches or more, in Class 200 PVC or SDR11 polyethylene.

How a line problem shows up
Most discharge line failures are found by their symptoms in the yard or at the panel, not by looking at the pipe.
- Wet or sunken ground along the line with no recent rain. E-One says the unit and discharge pipe are sealed, so a wet spot warrants a service call.
- Sewage surfacing in the yard. BCSS tells its customers this usually means a clog or a break in the service line and to check the outside cleanout.
- An E-One Sentry Protect Plus panel showing Trouble for system over-pressure, which the panel raises for a closed valve or a blockage downstream.
- A pump that runs and runs but the tank level barely drops, which Myers lists under an obstructed tap at the force main or a valve closed at the street.
- A break while digging. E-One's guide: if a pipeline breaks, call immediately, minimize water use, and do not repair it yourself.
What we check, and what you should leave alone
We trace the line from the tank fitting to the property-line valve, test the pump against it for pressure and flow, and find the leak or blockage before digging. The repair replaces the damaged section with the pipe the utility specifies, re-bedded, and the line is pressure tested; Fairhope's installation form makes a pressure test part of a correct installation. Where the problem is a blockage rather than a break, the line is cleared from the tank end with the pump isolated.
The homeowner step is limited and important. Stop using water and keep people and pets away from the wet area. For a known broken discharge pipe, E/One tells its customers to turn off pump power and call for service. Keep away from wet electrical equipment and follow your utility’s instructions.
This is not gravity sewer line repair
A house without a pump has a 4 inch gravity sewer line to the street, and problems with it, roots, bellies, broken clay, are a different trade with different tools. A grinder station has a small pressurized line instead, and that is what this page is about. If you are not sure which you have, the presence of a panel and a lid in the yard answers it.

Your name, a way to reach you and what the pump is doing. That is all we need to start. Town and utility are optional.
Sewage backing up or overflowing? Stop using water and call now: (251) 850-8031. On a utility-owned pump, call your utility first.
How the visit goes
Step 1: Respond to a known break
For a known break, stop using water and call for help. Follow the utility and model instructions for safely isolating power.
Step 2: Locate
The line is traced from the tank to the property-line valve and the leak or blockage pinpointed before any excavation.
Step 3: Expose and repair
The damaged section is dug out, cut and replaced with pipe meeting the utility's specification, with fittings made for pressure service.
Step 4: Test
Pump run against the repaired line, pressure held and checked, cycle timed.
Step 5: Restore
Review what the estimate includes for backfill, grading and surface restoration, and ask where the repaired pipe runs.
Check who can do the work
Your sewer utility decides who can repair or replace the pump. Compare the rules by utility before scheduling the work.
Questions people ask
Who is responsible for the pipe between my grinder pump and the street?
It depends on the utility and the location of the break. Riviera uses the shut-off and check valve boundary, North Baldwin uses the property line, and Fairhope assigns the service line from the connection to the customer. Ask your utility to confirm who handles the affected section.
I hit the line with a shovel. What do I do first?
Stop using water, keep clear of the break and call your utility or pump service provider. E/One instructs owners to shut off the pump for a confirmed discharge pipe break. Leave wet electrical equipment alone and ask the provider how to proceed.
Is there sewage in my yard because of the discharge line?
Usually. BCSS says sewage in the yard most often means a clog or break in the service line. The other causes are a tank overflowing from its lid vent during an outage, and a failed lid seal. We check all three.
Can the line be clogged rather than broken?
Yes. Wipes and grease that make it past the grinder can pack the line at a fitting or valve, and Myers lists an obstructed tap at the force main as a cause of a pump that runs without pumping. A blockage is cleared from the tank end with the pump isolated; a break is replaced.
