How to tell if a grinder pump is bad

Short answer

A persistent alarm, labeled seal warning, repeat breaker trips or a pump that runs much longer than normal can indicate a problem. Stop water use if the pump may not be clearing the basin. Ask the utility or pump technician to check the station.

You can tell a grinder pump is going bad from the panel and the drains before it fails outright: alarms that come more often, an alarm that is still lit an hour after you stopped using water, a red seal-leak light, an overload or breaker that trips a second time, a pump that runs far longer than it used to, and drains that slow when the house is busy. Each of those is a line in a manufacturer's troubleshooting table, not a guess.

Look for changes you can observe from outside the equipment, and call for a check before adding water to test a pump that may not be working.

Safe steps, in order

Nothing here opens the panel or the basin. If a step does not clear it, stop and make the call.

  1. Step 1: Count the alarms

E-One: if the alarm sounds frequently, call for service. Two in a month after years of none is frequent. Write down the dates.

  2. Step 2: Time the alarm

Stop using water and check the alarm instructions for your utility and panel. A recurring alarm deserves a service call even if it clears in between.

  3. Step 3: Read the lights

A red seal light on a Keen or Myers pump means the lower seal has failed; Myers says to pull the pump immediately to save the motor. An amber Trouble light on an E-One Sentry panel means the panel has caught brown-out, run-dry or over-pressure.

  4. Step 4: Run the safe check if you are unsure the pump works at all

Do not add water to a station you suspect is failing. Record when you last heard it start or stop under normal use. A technician can test the cycle after confirming the pump has power and the basin can accept more water.

The warning signs, with where each comes from

In rough order from early to late.

  • Alarms more often than before, or an alarm that stays on more than an hour with the water off. E-One owners guide.
  • A red seal-leak light. KeenMoisture in the seal chamber, lower seal failed, service before the upper seal fails. Myers: water past the lower seal, remove the pump immediately.
  • An overload that trips, is reset once, and trips again after a short run. MyersThe pump is damaged.
  • A breaker that trips a second time within seconds. MyersLikely a short in the motor or control box.
  • Longer run times and a pump that cannot catch up on busy evenings. LibertyA pump delivering low capacity because total head is beyond its capability; Barnes: stator damaged or torn, cutter jammed.
  • New noiseGrinding, rattling, or a hum with no pumping (Keen, Hydromatic, Barnes).
  • Water or sewage at the lid, or a smell that the ten-minute flush does not clear (E-One).

What happens when a grinder pump fails

The basin stops emptying. E-One stations are built with a 24-hour emergency storage capacity depending on water use, so the first thing most households notice is the alarm, then slow drains, then sewage at the lowest fixture or at the lid once the storage is gone. On a failed dual-seal pump the motor takes in water, which is why Keen and Myers both say to act on the seal light before the second seal goes. A failed pump on a low-pressure sewer also loses the check valve's protection if the valve is what failed, and the main can push back toward the house.

What a failure costs you depends on who owns the pump and who may replace it. On BCSS, BCSS supplies and installs the replacement pump; elsewhere, the owner does, to the utility's specification. Our utility pages carry each rule with its source.

The most common reasons pumps fail

Read across the Keen, Liberty, Myers, Barnes and Zoeller tables and the same causes keep appearing: things that should never have gone down the drain (grease, wipes, rags, floss) jamming the cutter and coating the floats; level controls that stick or drift; check valves that leak or stick; seals that let water into the motor; and electrical damage from storms or low voltage. Grease and wipes lead the list. The what-not-to-flush guide is the cheapest maintenance there is.

What we check to decide repair or replacement

Running and start current against the manufacturer's figures; insulation resistance of the motor; the seal chamber for water; the cutter and ring for wear and clearance; stator condition on progressive cavity pumps; float or pressure-switch operation; the check valve; and the panel's components. Keen allows field replacement of the impeller and retainer plate only; deeper repair goes to an authorized center or means a new pump.

When it is an emergency

Report a labeled seal warning or repeated overload trip promptly. The pump model determines what the technician does next. If sewage backs up, stop water use and call immediately. For smoke or active sparking, move away and call 911.

Questions people ask

How do I know if my grinder pump is working?

Run clean water at a tap until the pump starts, turn the tap off, and listen for the pump to run and stop by itself. That is E-One's vacation flush, used as a test. On Keen, Myers and E-One Sentry panels a run light also shows when the pump is on.

What is the most common reason a grinder pump fails?

Across the manufacturer tables, what goes into the basin: grease, wipes and rags that jam the cutter and foul the floats. Behind that, level controls, check valves, seals and storm damage.

What happens when a grinder pump fails?

The basin fills. You get an alarm, then slow or gurgling drains, then sewage at the lowest fixture or the lid once the storage is used up. E-One's stations are designed around roughly a day of storage with water use minimized.

Can a bad grinder pump be repaired, or does it need replacing?

Floats, level sensors, check valves, capacitors, panels and seals are repairs. A flooded motor, a torn stator or a shorted winding is usually a replacement. On BCSS, BCSS does the replacement; elsewhere, the rule is your utility's.
