Grinder pump emergency help

Short answer

Stop using water and leave the panel and basin closed. For a backup or overflow, call for help now. On BCSS, Gulf Shores Utilities or a utility-maintained station, call your utility first.

If your grinder pump alarm is on, stop using water. If it is safe to approach, you can use a clearly marked external silence button; leave the panel closed. If you are on Baldwin County Sewer Service, Gulf Shores Utilities or a utility-maintained system, call your utility first.

Use the instructions below to find the right number for your system. If sewage is backing up or overflowing, or the panel is smoking or sparking, act immediately.

What to do, in order

  1. Step 1: Water off

Stop every fixture in the house. Tell everyone in the house.

  2. Step 2: Leave the equipment closed

Only use a clearly marked external silence button when it is safe to approach.

  3. Step 3: Check who to call first

BCSS, Gulf Shores Utilities and utilities that maintain the pump are the first call. If unsure, check your sewer bill or use the utility lookup.

  4. Step 4: Contact the right provider

Call for urgent help. Give your town, utility, panel brand and how long the alarm has been on.

The first ten minutes

Do these in order. None of them involves a tool.

  • Stop the water. No flushing, laundry, dishwasher or showers. The tank is the only storage you have, and every gallon counts.
  • If it is safe to approach and the panel has a clearly marked external silence button, you can quiet the horn. This does not clear the alarm.
  • Read the panel from outside. Note whether the red light is steady or flashing, whether there is an amber run light or a Trouble light, and whether anything is humming.
  • Check your utility and panel instructions below before waiting. Do not cycle a breaker to clear an alarm.

Who to call first, by utility

The utility decides whether your first call is to them or to a plumber.

  • Baldwin County Sewer ServiceCall (251) 971-3022 promptly if the red high-level alarm on its documented Keen station is flashing. Its general FAQ discusses contacting BCSS or a plumber for other alarms that persist past 15 minutes. Only BCSS installs replacement pumps on its system.
  • Gulf Shores UtilitiesReport any red alarm to the Board at (251) 968-6323. This applies even if the alarm clears and even after hours.
  • Riviera Utilities and the City of FoleyThey will not repair or replace anything on your side of the property line. Call a plumber.
  • Fairhope, North Baldwin Utilities, Loxley, Daphne, City of Orange BeachThe owner maintains the pump. Call a plumber. Orange Beach lists 251-974-5617 for system issues on its side.
  • MAWSSThe customer's own plumber, because MAWSS says it will not fix a customer-owned grinder pump. The exception is a MAWSS decentralized subdivision, where MAWSS maintains the pump; call MAWSS at 251-694-3165.
  • Mobile County Water, Sewer and Fire Protection AuthorityMCWS technicians maintain its Barnes stations. Call MCWS at 251-653-7346 if the light is still on after 15 minutes.
  • South Alabama Utilities (Semmes, Citronelle)These are effluent systems maintained by SAU. Press the red light on the panel to silence it, then call SAU at (251) 649-4316.

Three situations that change the advice

A broken discharge pipe. If sewage is surfacing along the line between the tank and the street, E-One says this is the one time to turn off power to the pump, then report the damage and keep water use to a minimum. If you were digging when it happened, call right away.

Smoke, flames or active sparking at the panel: move away and call 911. Sewage coming up in the house or yard: stop the fixtures and call your utility or pump service provider immediately.

Flooding: stay away from the water and equipment. BCSS advises shutting off the pump circuit during flooding, but do not cross water or touch wet equipment to reach a breaker. Call an electrician if you cannot safely isolate power.

Power outage

Without power the pump does nothing, and Barnes points out it cannot sound an alarm either. E-One says the station holds roughly a day of normal use, and MAWSS tells its customers most tanks hold about a day of normal flow. Use as little water as you can. When power returns the alarm may sound until the station catches up; E-One says to call if it is still on an hour later. BCSS lists a 6,500 watt running, 8,125 watt starting generator with an L14-30 connection as the minimum for its Keen stations, and Riviera requires a generator receptacle on every new station in Foley.

Requesting urgent service

Use the form for service requests you can wait to hear back about. For sewage backing up or overflowing, call your sewer utility or pump service provider now.

For a service request, include your town, utility, panel brand and how long the alarm has been on.

Emergency line open 24/7. If you need a plumber after checking your utility’s rules, call (251) 850-8031. Call any hour to report an urgent problem. How soon someone can come depends on the job and is confirmed on the call. We do not promise a visit at any hour.

Questions people ask

Engraving of a gentleman on a penny-farthing bicycle with a lantern at the wheel, his coat tails flying, shading his eyes to look ahead.
Plate XXXVI. His Grace's conveyance. No arrival time is promised, and this is why.
Can I use a little water while I wait?

Stop using water while an active alarm is being checked. The BCSS Keen guide warns that continued water use during a high-level alarm can cause a plumbing backup.

Should I turn the breaker off?

Only for a broken discharge pipe or a flood. E-One's instructions say not to disconnect power to the unit otherwise, because the pump needs power to clear the tank once the problem passes.

My neighbor's alarm is going off and they are away. What should I do?

E-One's guide says to call the service number and not to investigate yourself. On BCSS that means BCSS; on Gulf Shores Utilities, the Board. Do not open their panel or lid.

There is sewage in the yard but no alarm. Is that still an emergency?

Yes. BCSS says sewage in the yard usually means a clog or break in the service line, and E-One says wet spots around the unit or pipe without recent rain warrant a service call. Stop water use and keep people and pets away. Call whoever services your pump or sewer connection immediately.
