What to do with a grinder pump in a power outage
Short answer
Without power, the pump cannot move wastewater. Keep water use to a minimum. If the alarm is on when power returns, check the utility’s call instructions before waiting. Call for help right away if sewage is backing up or overflowing.
When the power goes out, a grinder pump stops moving wastewater, and every flush, shower and load of laundry goes into a tank that nobody is emptying. The pump makers and the local utilities agree on the response: cut water use to the minimum, leave the pump connected, and expect an alarm when the power comes back.
This guide covers how long the tank gives you, the exact steps E-One, Keen, Barnes and the Baldwin and Mobile county utilities publish, what to do before a hurricane, what a generator needs to be, and why the alarm after an outage is usually not a failure.
What stops when the power stops
Everything. E-One's installation instructions state that the grinder pump cannot dispose of wastewater without electrical power. The BCSS Keen user guide and the Barnes user guide go one step further: without power the pump can neither dispose of wastewater nor provide an alarm signal, so on those systems a dark panel is not reassurance. The EPA lists overflows during power outages, where standby generators are not available, as a disadvantage of every pressure sewer.
Your drains still work by gravity into the tank, which is the problem. The tank fills at the rate your household uses water, and when it is full the excess comes out at the lowest point: the lid vent in the yard or the lowest fixture in the house.

How long the tank gives you
It depends on the tank and on you. E-One's owner's guide says the system has a 24-hour emergency storage capacity, depending on water usage, and that repairs should be carried out within that period. MAWSS's hurricane page tells its pressure-sewer customers that tanks will hold about a day of normal sanitary flow but that water use should be limited until power returns. BCSS says a standard pump basin holds approximately 100 gallons, depending on the type. North Baldwin Utilities' specification asks for a well that can store approximately 70 gallons after the high-level alarm trips without overflow.
A family of four that showers, flushes and runs the dishwasher as usual can use that up in a few hours. Do not assume the tank will last through a long outage. The reserve depends on how full the tank was when power failed and how much water goes down the drains.
Before a hurricane
The utilities publish pre-storm steps, and they differ, so follow the one that serves your address.
- BCSSAsk the utility about preparing your specific pump before a storm. Leave the control panel closed.
- BCSS user tips call for shutting off the pump circuit during flooding. Do not go near wet electrical equipment or through standing water to reach a breaker. Ask an electrician to check equipment that has been flooded before restoring power.
- Gulf Shores UtilitiesNever disconnect or turn off the breaker to the grinder pump system when leaving town, with one exception, an emergency or hurricane situation covered by its emergency preparedness guidance.
- E-OneDo not turn off the power to the pump unless in response to a broken discharge pipe; before a long absence, do E-One's vacation flush: run clean water in until the pump starts, shut the water off, and let the pump finish its cycle so the tank is pumped down.
- MAWSSPlan for one of three options before the emergency, since without one the page warns of an unhealthy situation.
Generators: what the documents say
A generator works only through a proper transfer switch or receptacle, and the sizes are published. The BCSS Keen panel comes with a generator receptacle and the manual's suggested minimum generator is 30 amp, 240 volt, single phase, four wire, 6,500 watts running and 8,125 watts starting, with a NEMA L14-30 connector; BCSS's FAQ states the residential requirement as 6,500 watts minimum, 220 volt four wire. E-One offers an optional 20 amp, 250 VAC generator receptacle with automatic transfer, and says alarms function normally in generator mode. Riviera Utilities requires a generator receptacle with a manual transfer breaker on every new low-pressure connection.
MAWSS's hurricane page lists the three options plainly: a generator, with a licensed electrician installing a transfer switch at the house service box; hiring a septic service to empty the tank as needed, a cost neighbors can share; or relocating until power is restored. The Mobile County Water, Sewer and Fire Protection Authority specified generator receptacles on its Barnes station panels, and during the 2020 hurricane season its homeowners connected generators to run their stations through extended outages.
When the power comes back
Expect the alarm. E-One's owner's guide says that after a power failure the alarm may activate until the unit clears itself, and that if the alarm remains on more than an hour after power is restored you should call for service. E-One's Sentry panels can also show a Trouble light for a brownout, which is common as utility power stabilizes. On Keen panels the horn, where fitted, can be silenced with the outside toggle; the light stays on until the level drops and then resets on its own.
A cleared light can mean the station caught up, but Gulf Shores Utilities still asks you to report the alarm. If sewage is backing up or the alarm returns, call for help. A pump that runs without lowering the level needs service. Myers' manual links a breaker that trips after a thunderstorm to possible lightning damage in the motor or control box.
Storm season on this coast
Coastal storms can cut power and flood the yard around the station. Before a storm, ask your utility how to report an alarm or suspected damage at your address.
For a rental or a seasonal home, give the person checking the property the sewer utility’s number and the location of the panel. Ask them to report alarms from a safe distance after power returns.
Step by step
Step 1: Cut water use to the minimum
E-One: keep water usage to a minimum. BCSS Keen guide: keep water usage to a minimum. Flush only when needed, skip showers and laundry, and do not run the dishwasher.
Step 2: Leave the pump connected
E-One: do not disconnect power to the unit. The only exception E-One allows is a broken discharge pipe. Follow your utility if it says otherwise during flooding.
Step 3: Watch the yard and the lowest drain
If sewage appears at the lid or backs up inside, stop all water use. BCSS says continued use during an alarm can cause a plumbing blockage.
Step 4: When power returns, follow your utility’s alarm instructions
For flashing red on the documented BCSS Keen station, stop using water and call BCSS promptly. Call Gulf Shores Utilities for any red alarm. E/One describes up to an hour after power returns if there is no earlier utility instruction and no backup or overflow.
Step 5: Report damage you can see
A broken discharge pipe, a flooded panel or a lid that has lifted are service calls, not DIY. E-One says to report damage and minimize water use; on a broken discharge pipe it says to turn off power to the pump.
Questions people ask
Why is my grinder pump alarm going off after a power outage?
The basin may have filled while the pump was off. Some stations clear after power returns. Follow your utility and panel guidance before waiting. Call promptly for a flashing red alarm on the documented BCSS Keen station or any red alarm on Gulf Shores Utilities.
Can I use the toilet during a power outage with a grinder pump?
Sparingly. The tank keeps filling with every flush and nothing empties it. E-One, Keen and MAWSS all say to keep water use to a minimum until power is back.
Should I turn off the breaker to my grinder pump during a storm?
Only if your utility says so. BCSS advises shutting off the pump circuit if the station floods. Never approach a wet breaker or cross floodwater to reach it. Have any flooded equipment checked before restoring power. Gulf Shores Utilities says never turn it off except in a hurricane emergency. E-One says only for a broken discharge pipe.
What size generator runs a grinder pump?
For the BCSS Keen panel, the manual's suggested minimum is 6,500 watts running and 8,125 watts starting on a 30 amp, 240 volt, four-wire L14-30 connection. Other panels differ; the receptacle and transfer switch must match the panel, and an electrician installs them.
Will a grinder pump overflow during a power outage?
It can if water use continues. E-One puts storage at roughly a day of normal use; BCSS says a standard basin holds about 100 gallons. The EPA lists outage overflows as a known disadvantage of pressure sewers without standby power.
