Sparks or burning smell at the grinder panel: safety first

Short answer

Keep away from the panel and basin. For smoke, flame or active sparking, get to safety and call 911. If there is only a burning smell, use the house breaker only if the area and your route to it are dry and safe. Do not restart the pump before inspection.

Move away from a grinder panel that is smoking, burning or actively sparking and call 911. For a burning smell without smoke or sparking, isolate the circuit only from a safe, dry house electrical panel. Keep clear of the pump equipment and leave the enclosure closed.

This page is short on purpose. The causes section is for after the power is off.

Safe steps, in order

Nothing here opens the panel or the basin. If a step does not clear it, stop and make the call.

  1. Step 1: Get clear and call 911 for an active hazard

Smoke, flames or active sparking are reasons to move to safety and call emergency services. Do not approach the pump to silence it or try to find what failed.

  2. Step 2: Keep clear

Stay away from the enclosure, the junction box and the basin lid. The ground around a station carries the feed to it. Keep children and pets back.

  3. Step 3: Burning smell alone: use a dry, safe house breaker or call an electrician

If there is no smoke or sparking, switch off the pump circuit only from a safe, dry house electrical panel. If reaching the breaker means crossing water or approaching damaged equipment, stay back and call an electrician.

  4. Step 4: Stop using water and call for service

With the pump off, the basin's storage is all you have. No laundry, no dishwasher, minimal flushing. Then call us. Tell us what you saw and whether there was a storm; it changes what we bring.

What causes it

For reading after the breaker is off. From the Myers, Keen and Liberty tables.

  • A short in the motor or control box (Myers). Water past the seals into the motor, or a failed component in the panel.
  • Lightning. Myers names lightning damage to the motor or control box after an electrical storm. Panels on the Gulf Coast take hits every summer.
  • Damaged pump cords or a short to ground (Keen). A cord chafed where it enters the basin or is clamped at the lid can arc.
  • A contactor or relay that is failing. Keen attributes chattering contactors to failing floats; a contactor that chatters for long enough pits and burns.
  • Water in the junction box or enclosure after heavy rain.
  • Low voltage making the motor draw high current (Keen, Liberty), heating connections until something lets go.

Why the pump's own enclosure is not the place to switch it off

Keen tells technicians to pull the motor leads off at the control panel before touching the motor or grinder; the breaker alone, Keen says, is not enough. Liberty requires a double-pole disconnect near the pump for the same reason: a single pole leaves one hot leg. If trained technicians need those precautions inside the box, a homeowner reaching into a smoking one has no safe move. The breaker in your house is upstream of all of it.

What we check

With the circuit locked out: the enclosure for burn marks, water and the failed component; the contactor, relay, capacitors and overload; the pump cord and junction box; insulation resistance of the motor to ground; the supply voltage and the breaker; and the pump itself if the fault traced to the motor. A panel that has burned is replaced, not patched; control panel repair and replacement is its own service.

After a storm

A panel that sparks, smells or trips after lightning is a storm casualty. Myers lists it. Leave the breaker off, and if the home is on BCSS or Gulf Shores Utilities tell them as well as us; the alarm light is likely dark, which is the one condition in which those utilities' first-call rules do not trigger on their own.

Questions people ask

Why is my grinder pump shooting a spark when I turn it off?

A visible spark at a switch, breaker or panel when the pump starts or stops is not normal and cannot be diagnosed from a description. Leave the breaker off and have the panel inspected. Arcing at contacts usually means a contactor, relay or connection that is failing.

There is a burning smell but no sparks. Is it still an emergency?

A burning smell can mean overheating. If the house breaker and the way to it are dry and safe, switch the circuit off there; otherwise keep clear and call an electrician. If you see smoke or active sparks, move away and call 911.

Can I turn the power back on so the sewage does not back up?

No. A panel that has arced once will arc again, and a fire is worse than a backup. Keep water use to a minimum, and if the repair has to wait ask about pumping the basin down in the meantime.

Who pays for a lightning-damaged grinder panel?

Depends on your utility's ownership rule and your home policy. On most local utilities the pump and panel are the owner's; BCSS and Gulf Shores Utilities both say so. Our utility pages lay out each rule with its source.
